So is Quay going to take the leap to being good, now that there's (at least) two 2nd linebackers coming to take his job? I have to think that was part of the equation here. I liked the Cooper pick, really didn't like the Hopper pick, but if there's an iron sharpen iron thing going on then maybe this all works out and the three make each other better.

"Coming to take his job" is more than a slight overstatement.

Take his job? You realize Quay is basically the only starting LB they had and while they will run mostly out of a 4-2-5 nickel, technically they are now running a "4-3 base" and will need more off ball LB for that formation right? Cooper isn't taking Quay's spot, he's drafted to be his partner. Hopper is there to continue to fill out the room.

Honestly I think a big part of Quay looking meh was a combination of Barry and Campbell. Obviously we all hate Barry as DC and he did his players no favors in putting them in position to make plays, but then alongside that, Campbell was a headache and uncoachable and that left Quay in a bad position.

Running with this for a second, we only have Campbell's side of the story there.  And we are unlikely to get Barry's side publicly.  According to Campbell, everything good he did was seemingly on his own, and when he wasn't good it was because he did what Barry said.  We know that Barry isn't an outstanding DC.  But the truth is most likely somewhere in the middle.  Barry wasn't the one missing tackles, or leaving his assignment, or getting out run by TEs.  Perhaps Quay was trying to play his position and cover for Campbell doing his own thing.  What we do know about the 2024 LB room is that it is going to be fast.

GOOD.  Give me more character concerns.  I want guys with nasty for a change.  Its been 12 years since we have had any REAL nasty to this defense.

Nasty and toughness are meaningless buzz words that people use as an amorphous magic ingredient that's going to fix all of their favorite team's problems... And never actually does.

welllll, we are about to get a case study here, arent we?  It sure as hell isnt switching DCs over, and over, and over, and over again.

Especially when we keep hiring the same guy with a different name tag.

I do not care at all for off ball linebackers, but this one is becoming my favorite pick of the draft more and more with each passing thought.

Thankful I had a big event this weekend and couldn’t watch live as the Eagles ripped my heart out. Would likely have had my opinion on him soured by that miss otherwise.

Loving the potential of this defense.

You and I have had our discussions about OBLB value and frankly after years on this site, my view has moved some towards the "it's a less valuable position." That's one of the reasons I was shocked that we double dipped with 2 top 100 picks.

Then I thought about it more and realized this is an area where Gute isn't TT. I think we have enough of a sample size now to know Gute gives OBLB a lot more value overall than TT did.

He drafted Quay at 22. He paid Campbell a boatload after one good season. Now he goes back to back OBLB in the 2nd and 3rd. I never thought he'd do that but the signs were there.

It’s funny because I get why OBLB is devalued. The DL comes first pressure on the QB is more important than anything. Both edge rushers and iDL. Corners and safeties who cover like corners come next. As the NFL becomes more and more pass happy than it already was (really since the mid-2000s), you can never have enough corners.

So by default that kind of leaves off-ball linebackers in the lurch, especially with the de-emphasis on the run game. However, it’s so easy to see how linebackers can be the special sauce that seems to make it all gel. San Fran has a hell of a defensive front, but you can’t watch that team without noticing their linebackers before anything else.

That defense never really struck me as nasty. Mostly just opportunistic
