RedGold
Berlin Overview We start this season on the road against one of our oldest rivals. We return the majority of the team from last season but believe the upgrades we made this offseason will help us go all the way. Rome is strong on both sides of the ball, but so are we. We will carry many of the same offensive and defensive themes as last year. Offense We want to remain balanced, stress the defense horizontally and vertically, and trust Stroud to audible and make the correct reads. Running Game Pacheco will get about 50% of the snaps with Pollard and Achane each getting 25%. All 3 will be utilized in the run and pass and all 3 will run inside and out. Pacheco will be used in short yardage and late game situations to keep the chains and the clock moving. Passing Game As Stroud goes into his second year, we want to give him the ability to attack the entire field. We will go under center and from shotgun. We will utilize some play-action and rollouts. We will typically have at least one receiver pushing deep to allow Stroud to take deep shots. None of our WRs have a limited route tree, so we won’t force them into a specific role. 3 WR – 65% - Garrett/Drake/Aiyuk/Goedert/RB - Our base set, Garrett and Drake will be outside with Aiyuk in the slot. All 3 will run full route trees to keep the defense from being able to key on one guy. Sometimes Aiyuk will motion across the formation, sometimes he will motion out to stack with the WR on his side, sometimes he will stay in place and we will snap quicker. We will have a balanced run-pass ratio from this set with Stroud having the ability to change the play at the line. 2 TE – 10% - Garrett/Aiyuk/Goedert/Darnell – We will use this in mostly short yardage and goalline situations with Darnell coming in as an additional blocker and large target. 4 WR – 20% - Garrett/Drake/Aiyuk/Reed/RB – We will use this to get Jayden on the field and get the ball in his hands. We will use some trips, some jet sweeps with Jayden, and some hurry up here to stress the defense 2 RB – 5% - Garrett/Aiyuk/Goedert/RB/RB – On occasion, we will have two RBs on the field at the same time. One will commonly split out to pull a LB out of the box. Defense We will play an even mix of man and zone with the primary coverages being Cover 1 Man and Cover 3 Zone. We will mix in a little Cover 2 Man, Cover 2 Zone, and Cover 4 Zone just to keep Herbert honest. DL – We welcome Nick Bosa to our DL and will lean on them to set the tone for our defense. Nothing flashy here, we expect our guys to win in the trenches. We will rotate if and when guys need a breather. LB – In nickel, Bernard will have the RB in man coverage and Jordyn will have the TE. In base, Zaire will play MLB and have the RB while Bernard and Jordyn each have a TE. CB – Deonte and Christian will play sides to not tip coverage. Witherspoon will play the slot and, will on occasion, come on a blitz. If they go base, Deonte comes off and Devon plays outside. S – Bynum will be playing deep middle most of the game. Winfield will serve in a number of roles as usual to make Herbrt’s day more difficult– covering the slot if Witherspoon blitzes, doubling the TE or slot WR, sitting in a middle zone, spying the QB. Rome Rome The Rome Dome and Strategy It’s opening week for us here at the Rome Dome and we plan on using the crowd and opening up the Rome Dome this week for some unseasonably warm 91 degree weather this Sunday. We want to use the weather and our depth to our advantage on both sides of the ball by running a no huddle up tempo type of offense. We bring back 10 out of 11 starters from last years teams (RIP Ramcyzk knees) and everyone knows our signals, our offense and how we want to attack. Meanwhie we rotate our defensive front regularly in order to keep all of our bodies fresh. As the home team, we weat white and force the opposition to wear a color in the sun to add onto our advantage Offense The uptempo offense allows us to do a couple of things, one, it minimizes the types of looks we will be facing as well as tiring out Berlins starters for later in the game. We believe there is a rather large drop off between the Berlin starters and backups on their defensive line so we plan on making some major headway late in the game with the crowd on our side in what is likely to be a close game The offense this week leans on attacking the perimeters of this defense We want to run some off tackle plays and edge rushes to utilize the athleticism of our guards and our strength at tackle while minimilizing the impact the Berlin interior has on the run game. Swift will see most of the work from the backfield today from the up tempo offense but we will make sure to sub in Harris and Ford when he needs a blow on early down. Swift will see the majority of the third down work. Swift showed last year that when healthy he can be a lead back and he enters this week as healthy as he’s vever been entering a season. In the passing game, we put Keenan in the slow with Cooper and Waddle lined up outside. We also will incorporate some 4 wide more often than normal this week with Berlin having only one slot corner and their other corners almost exclusively being boundary guys. Shakir will get peppered with targets if we see the fourth corner lined up on him. Witherspoon will likely be lined up in the slot, if not expect Allen also to get a lot of targets against whatever boundary corner Berlin tries throwing in the slot. One of our big keys is attacking this corner group as outside of Witherspoon, they all struggled last year. Kincaid will go in motion out wide to not only help read the defense, but also to help the off tackle and zone rushing attack by removing a LB or the SS from the box. Swift and Harris will also occasionally flex out wide as we want to attack a LB crew that struggled mightily in coverage last year and we assume Berlin wont use both their safeties to cover Kincaid and Swift so one should be matched up with a LB Per usual we have our zone buster deams, floods and screens ready to go if we see Berlin playing a zone base defense. If foe some odd reason we see a conver one, expect some deep shots to Waddle on the outside with Cooper being his boundary WR self against cover two man. Up front Berlin has some good pass rushers but we come equipped with an excellent offensive line. Pocic will bounce back and forth helping n the interior while the RB or TE will often chip on Bosa to help out early on in the game (when we have plays where the RB flexes out, the TE will be on the line). This whole offense revolves around Justin Herbert and his mastery of our offense. With all of our weapons group returning expect hand signals and audibles. Herbert gets to call the plays as he goes and sees the defense. Defense Berlin comes into the year with a really nice offensive group lead by Sophmore CJ Stroud who had an excellent rookie season. Berlin brings a young trio of boundary receivers into the game. We math with lining up with Reed and Dean on the outside and Humphrey in the slot who has a ton of slot experience. With the Berlin WR group all being good, we don’t feel a need to assign a CB to a specific WR. Kyle Hamilton will play in the box and be assigned Pacheco out of the backfield when in man while Bolton gets Goedert. Per usual we line up in a majority cover 3/cover one look although we will be playing much more zone this game than our previous seasons would suggest. The weakness of the Berlin offensive line is in its pass blocking on the interior and we plan on having a heavy zone blitz look up the middle early on in the game. Up front we have a returning Chase Young and Matt Judon starting but we have a heavy rotation planned with Karlafitis and Huff meanwhile Harris will spell Tomlinson on pass rushing downs and Sweat will get short yardage downs for Campbell. The backbone of todays strategy on both ends is to utiilize our depth and keep sending fresh bodies in there defensively against Berlin. With Hamilton up in the box we are going to make Stroud account for him on every play as he can blitz drop into his middle zone or cover Pacheco out of the backfield Kendricks would rotate to cover the RB in this scenario). Kendricks will be our other player who has the ability to blitz up the middle or drop during our cover one looks. The varying looks should help our pass rush get home as we want to maintain our lanes and make sure Stroud does not extend plays. Cisco will generally be playing CF regardless of zone or man to help not tip off the QB. Mcmillan, an actual slot corner, will take whoever lines up as WR four in those situations for Kendricks with Singleton will come on whenever there is a two TE or FB look for Dean, pushing Humphrey outside Edited September 8 by RedGold

Blue
For various reasons, all of Berlin’s top 3 receivers struggled to open the season and I don’t see them performing better against Rome’s secondary. I think Rome’s decision to lean on the Berlin DL and put pressure on their depth pans out late. On the other hand, I’m not sure what Chase Young is doing in a BDL starting lineup—Huff and Karlaftis are both better players and have been for quite some time. Scoundrel
I like the simple straight to the point style of Berlin and I enjoy the Rome weather/element factor. I am still deciding on this heavy weight matchup.
TL-TwoWinsAway
Oooh. Interesting. Initial impressions: Rome has the offensive edge, while Berlin is bringing a strong defense. Time to go to the gameplans. Fascinating strategies in this one. I love the up-tempo offense that Rome is running, but I'm not entirely sure that it's a great fit against the Berlin defense: Swift, Harris and Ford aren't exactly a fearsome trio, and I have hesitations about running Keenan Allen, Amari Cooper and the oft-injured Jaylen Waddle into the ground. I was fully prepared to overlook the ages of Allen and Cooper, with Josh Palmer and Khalil Shakir waiting to rotate, but Rome mentioned incorporating "4 wide more often", which, again, leaves me concerned. With Berlin's stable of CBs (Benford, Banks, Witherspoon and Arnold are all quality players), I think they can match up. At the same time, I'm not blown away by Berlin's receiving weapons, but I love the fact that they're staying balanced and rotating through Pacheco, Pollard and Achane throughout the contest. Considering that rushing rotation and the dominant defensive front 4 that Berlin offers, I'm prepared to believe that it's enough to get them over the finish line. Berlin grinds out the decision in this one, 24-20.
SirA1
This is a very even matchup but I believe Rome will prevail at home. 28-21 Tomlinson and Campbell will destroy Runyan in the inside.

Doesn't make him an awful player. Now if it continues, then it's a different story
