This isn’t necessarily Cowboys-specific, but I think it’s an important read for those making the common refrain of “The Cowboys are doing great, we’re building our team that righty way, boo free agency, go draft, we are the best at drafting, go team.”

Obviously the draft is important, but it’s a crapshoot. And roster construction is a conveyor belt. Say it takes 3-4 years for a player to develop. You know what a non-first rounder becomes after 3 years? A contract year player. After 4? A free agent.

Our approach is often compared to Seattle’s, as Dak is frequently compared to Wilson, we’ve been trying to emulate their defensive system, and we just nabbed their ex-defensive coordinator. And yes, Seattle had an awesome run and were memorably innovative in how they approached the game. But eventually it fell apart, because you’re not gonna get borderline Hall of Famers like Russ, Sherman, and Chancellor in the mid-to-late rounds every year. That’s not sustainable, and it’s essentially necessary to build a consistent contender when using the draft as essentially your only means of player acquisition, because of roster turnover.

I think the elimination of the mammoth contracts back in  2010 for rookies were both a good and a bad thing. On one hand you are not banking on a unproven player. But on the other hand it has somewhat lessened the importance of the draft. For big time players that are going to be great for a long time. You are looking at 2 maybe 3 contracts in their whole career. The starting salary, the payout, and the retirement plan. And that's if you are very very lucky as a team.

No one is saying boo FA. The Cowboys have spent even. I think what most people are saying is the reliance on FA is a bad thing, because you overpay guys that were allowed to walk for a reason. In some cases you can strike gold, but more often than not you end up paying far too much for another teams castoff that never lives up to the pay day because if far exceeds their capability. I mean Watkins got like 17m and has never played a full freakin season. Cousins has won ... what? Yet he was paid like a 3x Super Bowl champ.

When  you overpay, it handcuffs you to that player whether they work out or not, similar to drafting high prior to 2010. Whether that player is good or not, you have handcuffed yourself to them and limited yoir resources for retaining the players who.deserve that money.

2/28: The Cowboys and Panthers both like Wake Forest safety Jesse Bates. - Tony Pauline, DraftAnalyst.com

Pauline notes that Dallas and Carolina could make a move on him in the third round, though it's possible that he could sneak into the second frame. -Walter

1/25: Someone to keep in mind for the Cowboys is Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. - Tony Pauline, DraftAnalyst.com

Per Pauline, Dallas is looking to address linebacker and defensive end this offseason, and Vander Esch would certainly fill the former need. He could be obtained via trading down in the first round or up in the second frame. -Walter

I like jesse bates in the third. but if they like him that much, take him in the second.

Seen him as a top 50 player on a lot of boards. Could go before our 2nd pick even

I have him just outside my top 50, but I could see him going as early as 23 to the Patriots. He fits their system very well and they are known to select 2nd round players in the late first range to lock in that 5th year option.

I know it's a highlight reel but they said he led the team in tackles so I'm not to worried about him doing the dirty work. He clearly has ball skills. A safety that can return kicks. When he has the ball in his hands he is fast as hell
