First round of FA complete.

For those that don't know, you can attempt to sign a maximum of three free agents per round, with one additional re-sign. It's completely blind bidding, which is good and bad (but crazy addicting). We did pretty well this round and got 3/4.

We re-signed Kilgore (just because we did in real life, though I got him much cheaper at about 1.25m per with no guaranteed money).

We also landed Justin Pugh from the Giants. I figured he would get 12/48 in real life, went a little below that in this with some of the salary built as per game roster bonuses (100k each) to ward against injury.

We landed Donte Moncrief from the Colts. I didn't want to get super splashy with the receiver position as I think we are mostly happy there. Moncrief has some upside, and he was pretty cheap. 5 million dollar signing bonus, base salaries of 4 and 4.5 the first two years before escalating. It essentially boils down to like a 2 year, 13.5 million dollar deal if we want.

We actually had the best offer on Kyle Fuller, but then one of the GMs went crazy and ended giving him and a 160 million dollar contract and nate solder a 200 million dollar contract lol. Not sure how that works, but if not for him, we would have landed Fuller as well i'm pretty sure as I was basing his contract on AJ Bouye's.

Put in a waiver wire claim on Willie Beavers. He's been a massive disappointment at the NFL level since being drafted 2 years ago, and when you're a bad lineman on the Seattle Seahawks, you know you're bad. But I believe that he's mostly played at Tackle in the NFL, which clearly isn't working. He's still young, so this is a developmental waiver wire pick up on the minimum salary to see if maybe we can turn him into a serviceable guard.

Couple of trades being kicked around - Jimmie Ward for Bruce Irvin. Irvin had a lot of success in this same scheme as the 4-3 SAM for Seattle, nothing 17.5 sacks in 3 years. That'd be pretty nice for the pass rush in an area that isn't even designated to be a pass rush specialist. This is before we add a true leo. The salary about averages out. I'm unable to extend Ward at this point in the mock (since his current salary is guaranteed, any extension would start at above what he makes not, and I'm not extending Ward at 9/10 million per season), so he's basically on his last legs with the team in this mock. Then I would kick Barron to Will, and maybe sign Anthony Hitchens for the middle linebacker spot, or draft a guy like Josey Jewell in rounds 2/3.

The other trade I'm kicking around is Dante Fowler. Would be a little pricey, but I like him as a pass rush specialist. 8 sacks last year only playing 44% of Jacksonville's defensive snaps. Not the greatest in defending the run, but what I want is a pass rusher. He's on the last year of his rookie deal, plus we would have the fifth year option.

Well, irvin is a no go. Traded to the Packers for a fifth round selection. The Raiders needed the cap space, so a deal for a draft pick was preferable.

No idea where we stand on Fowler...guy just stops responding after a pick or two.

Round 2 of free agency tonight. Really struggling on who I should go after here. I have a couple of guys in mind, but there are still a lot of options available, so I'm struggling with who should get priority.

For us Gaines is still sitting there.

Be a nice upgrade over Johnson.

I loved Gaines coming out too. He's definitely on my list. Pricey, but he's good and aggressive

How much you got left?

11 mill apy seems fair for a guy like Gaines.

He and spoon would make a nice 1-2.

With Thomas and Tartt at safety.

About 50 million give or take. If I get rid of Ward, it bumps me up another 8.5 million. I do have one other cornerback in mind, probably not the guy most would think of, but he's a decent fit for a zone coverage cover man 3 scheme,  but I really feel like I should grab 2 (and still draft a guy to be the #4).

The thing that scares me with Gaines is that he's had trouble staying healthy. At 11 million apy, I can actually grab 2 guys (one of whom, as I said, I do really like for us). I'm really torn. I'm thinking of bidding on two corners this round, and I have the third guy already set.

Here's where I stand defensively right now:

Base:

DL - Thomas / Mitchell / Buckner / ???? (Blair / Marsh / Kikaha?)

SAM: Kikaha / Marsh maybe. We played Marsh all around last year, and Kikaha started as a SAM for the Saints

MLB: ????

WILL: Barron / Smith

CB: Spoon / Ward boundary, Williams Slot....nothing on the back end (Mabin and roster fodder like that)

S: Thomas / Tartt / Colbert

Passing downs:

DL: Blair / Thomas / Buckner / Dumervil?

LB: Not sure who would be the passing down backer. Probably Barron at this point?

Money backer (third safety playing linebacker) - Tartt

CB: Spoon / Ward / Williams

S: Thomas / Colbert

I'd really like to get in a position where we can have players focus on one position - Kikaha either at SAM or weakside defensive end / LEO. So either a pass rusher or another SAM type player is needed.

Just scanning through the list a few guys i would be interested in are Adrian Clayborn, Todd Davis, Isaiah Crowell/Jerrick McKinnon.

Crowell I'm probably going to pass on given that I acquired Gillislee earlier for a trade down of 6th rounders. McKinnon is in the discussion as a pass catching back, however.

Clayborn is super pricey right now for a guy I'm not sold on. He's had a lot of trouble staying healthy, and while he had 9.5 sacks last year, 6 came in one game. Right now, I'd have to offer him in the realm of 4/60.

Todd Davis is actually an interesting guy. I may have to look into that. I had someone else pegged at that position, but Davis is a little cheaper
