Yeah, I just wanted a receiving tight end because we don't really have a legitimate deep threat at WR.  Two receiving tight ends like Graham and Fleener really minimize the need for a deep threat at WR.

Both Moore and ESB are legit deep threats IMO.

Saints fans are jumping for joy at Fleener leaving, that offers some insight

Not sure Fleener is the answer in GB, its a guy with the initials GB that you really want. :)

As far as the young TEs, broncofan put together some decent info in NFL Gen on how long it takes for a young TE to make his mark in the NFL ( 3 years)

Its the hardest position to learn, both from a technique and from a playbook POV - they have to know the passing game AND the running game inside out and the guys coming in from college are initially overwhelmed. IF the Packers want more TE production in 2018, they are better off looking at another vet to pair with Graham than any of the UDFAs on the current roster. Kendricks= meh

Gartellus Bennett?

If it takes a TE 3 years, why not try to work one of these young players into that third spot while we still have a good first option at TE and a "meh" second option? Rather than in 2 years when Graham and these guys are all done and we have to start with an empty cupboard?

The two options aren't mutually exclusive. Keep developing the young guys while using vets to hold down the fort. GB likes to have 5 players in the FB/TE room total and it wouldn't surprise me for GB to go heavy at TE and keep a single FB in Ripkowski. MM talked about getting bigger/longer and that sure ain't Joe Kerridge

GB can use Rip or one of the TE's in the protector role ( ala Kuhn) and maybe Kendricks can be that guy - he's 6'3 and towers over the shrimps like Rip/Kerridge

And yes on Vegas comment: TE Gary Barnidge, with a hat tip to Cadmus for identifying the guy. 6'6 and fresh off a year of rejuvenation

GB also has RB Devante Mays battling with Joel Bouagnon for the heavy RB role, both are north of 230 lbs and can likely line up in the wishbone if needed

Some really interesting camp battles/position stuff among the Big RB/FB/TE crews and Philbin did wonders for the run game in years past

Question is are they "deep threats" in the same way Jeff Janis was a "deep threat" or Trevor Davis is a "deep threat" or will ESB and/or Moore be actual "deep threats"?

Davante is a deep threat. I don't get why we continuously say we need one.

Sure.

What people are trying to say is that we lack a speed element to our receiving corps.  Speed can be used in a number of ways to make an offense better, none of which Davante provide.

You can use speed to convert a long 3rd down on a simple drag route because all of the LBs need to drop really far back and so you can dump it underneath and actually convert.  You can throw it outside on the flat/slants patterns that we run ad infinum and turn the corner upfield rather than getting easily tackled for 2-6 yards.  You can create more space for your underneath targets when teams need to rotate help to a legitimate speed threat who is streaking down the middle of the field.  You can run a deep crossing pattern across the formation vs Cover 3, and actually have time to convert the pass before the rush gets there because the player is actually fast.

Sure, he'll get open deep, but I'm talking more about someone who will keep the safeties back on a regular basis purely because of their speed.

Safeties are always back when you play the Packers with Aaron Rodgers. He can make anyone a deep threat.

Until he breaks his collarbone because he tried to turn what should be a 5 yard pass into a 50 yard pass one too many times in a game.
