If those comments suggest that Sherels is the PR and Hughes is the KR, seems like we will be carrying 7 CBs. One of Newman or Alexander may end up a healthy scratch in place of a ST player in Sherels. Doesn't make sense to me that Sherels makes the team if Hughes can return punts competently. I'd rather have my best 5 CBs on game day, Sherels is not one of them.

I agree, but I just don't believe it's going to end up that way.

Punt returns isn't the only thing Sherels does. And CB play is certainly not the reason he'll make the team. He is the best special teams player on the team. He is best on the team on punt returns but he is also the best in punt coverage. He can cover kickoffs well and return kicks competently. And while he isn't a CB in anything other than name he is better than a random warm body there in case of lots of injuries in a game. If the team enters a game with 8 DBs and three of them get hurt during the same game it is better to trot Sherels out there in nickle coverage than be forced to play an extra LB (can't do nickle).

I'd rather have all of Rhodes, Waynes, Hughes, Newman  and Alexander available to me on game day. 5 CBs is pretty standard for this team on game day and I'm willing to sacrifice a little in punt coverage (which has been bad so far regardless) to get a better CB on defense.

I'm sure coaches may disagree with this approach but you're either losing out on Alexander's development on the active roster or Newmans leadership and experience on game day to carry a 30+ year old ST player who most don't see as much of a game changer.

I think 6 CB (Rhodes, Waynes, Hughes, Newman  and Alexander, Sherels) will be active on gameday, with only Hill being inactive, if he makes the 53.

It's just semantics, but I think there will be 5 CBs (Rhodes, Waynes, Hughes, Newman  and Alexander) active on gameday.

Sherels will be an active specialist along with McDermott, Quigly, and Carlson. Basically, I don't think whether Sherels is active will have anything to do with the rest of the DBs that are active. If Sherels is injured I would expect the team to still go with 5 CBs.

Depends on if CB six, in your scenario, is Sherels replacement on coverage units.

in an interview Mike Priefer pretty much said that Jayron Kerse is his 2nd best gunner & expects him to line up opposite Marcus Sherels.

Has to actually be on the field to do that. Hasn’t yet.

Does he know who is and isn't making the team yet? It could be that as long as they are on the team, they will fill those positions

Well, he's the one that pushes extra hard for Sherels every year, so I'm pretty sure he does have a pretty good idea.  He generally gets what he wants.

What is the reason he isn't playing? Is he hurt? I don't think I've heard anything injury related to Kearse, I could've missed something though.

I’ve wondered the same, because I know he’s been practicing. All that’s been said is “nicks and bruises” but for a fringe roster guy, that seems a poor reason by to play.
