Overrated/Underrated

Overrated: Clutchness. In a game that relies on 22 players on any given play doing their job correctly (not even counting special teams) clutch is just such a dumb arbitrary "talent"
usually used to prop up QBs that didn't do their jobs for 9/10 of a game but had a defense that still kept them in it till the end.

Underrated: Nickel Defense. I expect most teams play some form of nickel defense for over half of their defensive stats (In 2015 it was something like 63% of all defensive plays) yet when we talk about starters we usually look at it  from the base defensive alignment (4-3/3-4) which really isn't even the base defense anymore.

Second one; agreed entirely. NE rarely run anything other than some kind of hybrid, with more DBs than standard.

I agree that clutchness gets thrown around far too carelessly, and should not be used to give a free pass to a QB that sucked for 3 quarters. But performance under pressure is a real thing, some guys are terrible when the game is on the line, and some guys stay calm and do their jobs.

Overrated: The use of "Sr" on the back of jerseys. Super annoying.

WHY??? If I had my dad's name, no one would refer to him as BBF, Sr. He would be BBF, and I would be BBF, Jr. That's just the way it works. At the VERY least, wait until your Jr is playing the same sport you are, at the same time you are.

But even then...

Junior didn't bother with it on his jersey, even when they were on the same team.

What's even more annoying is having the roman numerals. That is so embarrassing. Robert Griffen III. Hahaha

Here's the thing... I can deal with that. I can deal with "Jr" and "III" and things that denote the 2nd, 3rd, 4th in the line of the name. What gets me is "Sr" specifically.

For example, this guy...

 a9b62020bd72aacd0ae307dca80e3bca--nfl-ra

Is Steve Smith. He's known by Steve Smith, and is called Steve Smith when people talk about him. He is not known by Steve Smith, Sr.

His son is Steve Smith, Jr. He is known by Steve Smith, Jr.

My dad is a Jr. No one ever referred to his dad as Sr.

I don't like the whole III after names tbh.

I get that people like to continue the lineage but as someone who has experienced almost entire families with the same name it's annoying and pointless. Just think outside the box a bit. I get "Jr." but much beyond that is dumb.

I mean Davis Love IV just turned pro, is he really going to name him son Davis Love V?

Overrated: Can't think of any that has not already been said.

Underrated:
Special Teams - It's crazy how 1/3 of an entire teams unit is often seen as a second hand priority in the eyes of most fans and media outlets. Which drives me nuts because it seems like people are so quick to mention things such as a coaches ability to manage the clock and play situational football. But all of that starts with field position, which in turn, is mostly led by the special teams play. For better or worse.

The only sort of praise that you hear about are Kickers and the occasional returners if they happen to be special(no pun intended). Very rarely do you hear about a teams gunner, long snapper, or place holder unless they screw up.

I agree that STs is underrated but it isn't 1/3 of the game. STs is on the field like 15%-20% of the time or so. Kickoff-x # of plays on offense-punt/XP/FG

Overrated: Number 1 receivers. I think the Saints and Patriots have shown that a passing attack is more dangerous with 4 good/decent targets than one "Number 1" WR.

Underrated: Special Teams specialists. Every year teams lose a games they should win because of a fumbled return, a botched coverage, a blown onside kick or whiffed tackle. Solid coverage units and STers with great situational awareness are very valuable.

It's just ridiculous, for me. They're not Roman Legionnaires (despite what some of them may think).

Overrated - QB mobility. I don't think it's a important attribute to a QB, and I'd rather have a quick read/release than mobility all day long. Just make fast reads and get rid of the ball. What I think is important is the ability to throw accurate passes on the run. That's arguably the most impressive quality of Aaron Rodgers. But if you are only fast or elusive with your legs, I don't really care.

Underrated - Special teams specialists. It always amazes me how overlooked it is. So many games are decided on good or bad special teams plays.

I suppose you might need a mobile QB if your line stinks so bad your signal caller has to run for his life.  ;)

Yeah, that's true, although that'd be more useful just to keep the QB alive rather than to win football games. If your QB is running for his live you are probably already doomed.
