Gruden's hype was a complete con job by the sports media. He was very fortunate to win that one SB he did with someone else's team and there's a reason he was booted from the Raiders the first time and why Tampa gave up on him. He also spent way too much time out of the league. Pure stupidity/

Bill Callahan was fortunate to make it to that one SB he did with someone else's team. That someone else who was "booted" for a first round pick.

Jack Del Rio is a terrible head coach. He’s good at getting you to the playoffs every once in a while but that’s about it. Ask Jags fans. We needed someone with experience to change our culture, Del Rio was that guy. We all knew it wasn’t a long term solution. We just needed to taste winning again.

A coach who can get you to the playoffs everyone once in a while isn’t terrible. He might be an underachiever and below average but not terrible. Trust me I’ve seen terrible coaches.

Frankly his biggest problem was in hiring/keeping the wrong OC/DC's.   Letting Bill Musgrave go and letting Ken Norton stay as DC really set that team back.   They have had talent issues on D, but it still didn't explain how poorly the D played, especially in areas Norton supposedly should have helped.   Carr & the 2017 O's regression were directly attributed to them going away from the power run-based game, and putting it all on the pass game - with Crabtree's skills in decline, and Coop's crazy drops.   Suddenly that OL which was great in run-blocking and very good in pass pro in 2016 was very vulnerable (although RT killed them in particular).

He wasn't a great HC, his bravado in going for W's late covered for his deficiencies.  But he wasn't really the problem, either, more that he couldn't recognize that his team needed better minds that the ones he brought in, and stuck with.

His firing last season was fair but I would have given him another shot. Ditching him to get Gruden was a bad decision though.

What makes you say this? They are clearly better coached top to bottom. It's more a talent issue with the roster that's holding them back. Despite all the clichès about the game passing Gruden by, his offense is a 2018 NFL offense. #2 in the league currently in yards.

Gruden the coach, is a 2018 NFL coach. He's just not a GM and will need someone to check and balance with him.

Del Rio was playing checkers. As clueless a coach as there was.
