Oklahoma City EF5s

After our first loss of the season last week, we still have our sights set on the #1 seed. With Louisiana being a division rival, there's a huge difference between finishing ahead of them and not, and we are looking forward to running the table and keeping pace with their squad.

Offense:

This week we want to utilize a run heavy offense to best mitigate a tough pass rush and take advantage of a weak linebacker group. We will use running plays of all types, utilizing both of our top running backs as much as needed.

Melvin Gordon and Joe Mixon are both playing at a high level and we will lean on them both in this game. We will maximize their touches by also featuring them both as receivers out of the backfield and split out wide. We will also utilize a good dose of 2 RB formations to help generate mismatches against the linebackers. We want to feature runs of all types in this game, using double teams at the point of attack to create enough space to get our runners to the second level where we expect they'll win. We also want to mix in WR sweeps with Adam Thielen, Robert Woods, and D.J. Moore to keep the defense guessing.

Cam Newton will also be featured in the running game with designed runs, options, and bootlegs. With Gordon, Mixon, and Newton all threats in the middle of the field, we trust that we can find the mismatch.

Our passing in this game will be mostly vertical with heavy use of play action. As usual for us, we will move our WRs around to try and find the best match. We expect Tre'Davious to shadow Thielen and Adoree' on Woods, both of which are even matches. We expect to find to success against Malcolm Butler, and we will do what we can to get Thielen or Woods matched up with him. We also think Kenny Stills can beat Butler, as well as our bench WRs which we will rotate into this 3rd WR spot. We will take plenty of shots against Butler in single coverage, regardless of what WR ends up there.

We will mix up our formations by using 2 RB, 4 WR, and 2 TE formations. We will run and pass out of all these formations. Our 2 RB formations will feature a lot of misdirection and counters, utilizing the non-play back as a distraction. In our 4 WR sets, our run plays will be draw heavy as an attempt to draw Khalil Mack and Myles Garrett downhill on the pass rush. In our 2 TE formations we will look to relentlessly attack the middle of the field with both the pass and the run.

We believe David Bakhtiari can hold down the left side by himself, so we will supply help to our right side when passing deep. This will mainly be in the form of a tight end, bur we will use our RB and bootlegs as well.

Defense:

With Robby Anderson doubtful for this game, Ivory Coast once again finds itself lacking weaponry. On defense this week, we will trust our coverage to shut down Ivory Coast's weapons, allowing us to be aggressive in pressuring Luck and stopping the run game.

Patrick Peterson will shadow Alshon Jeffrey. Shaquill Griffin will shadow Brandin Cooks with Malik Hooker helping over the top of Cooks at all times.

We will use a five man rush this week on most plays. We want to force one on ones across the line of scrimmage as we feel we can take advantage of Eric Kush on the inside. Von Miller will play on the right side and attack Dion Dawkins. If left alone, we expect Miller to do big things this game. If he's not, then we will welcome the fewer receiving threats and apply more pressure.

Cory Littleton, Darron Lee, and Adrian Amos will line up in the box and play the run. Amos will cover the tight end, Littleton on Nick Chubb, and Lee on Anthony Sherman. Each one will be expected to apply pressure if their man stays into pass protect.

Against the 20 personnel that Ivory Coast likes to run, Adrian Amos will come off the field for Benwikere. If Curtis Samuel is beating us from this formation, we will put Amos back onto the field for Cory Littleton. Amos will then play a deep zone, limiting Samuel's RAC ability.

Against 2 RB, 2 TE formations, Shaquill Griffin will come off the field for Lorenzo Alexander. If Alshon Jeffrey is the lone WR, Hooker will covert to a robber role. If Cooks is the lone WR, Hooker will continue to provide deep safety help against him.

Ivory Coast Black Rhinos

Ivory Coast Black Rhinos Gameplan:

Offense
3 Wide "20" Personnel
- We've gotten comfortable with the 20 personnel (3 WRs, 2 Backs) as our primary formation, and we continue to use it against Oklahoma City. We'll be utilizing a variety of formations with this set, including having Andrew Luck under center, in the pistol, and shotgun. We don't want to give OKC anything they can predict our offense running. Almost every play will feature a man in motion, whether one of the receivers or just shifting Sherman around in the backfield. Jeffery will be almost exclusively on the outside, while Cooks will alternate spending time in the slot and outside. At times we'll sub out Sherman for one of our tight ends, and we'll sprinkle in some additional looks (Jumbo with FB, 2 TEs, HB, Jeffery; 2 TE 2 WR 1 HB), but for the most part our personnel set will generate enough variety for us to move the ball whether we run or pass. Having 3 receivers should lighten the box up, and Nick Chubb has proven recently he's more than capable of handling the starting role.

Stop Von Miller- Von Miller can wreck anyone's day, even the All-Pro's in the league. While we still have full faith in Wagner, we need to make sure Dawkins doesn't get exposed, and we will be shifting the offensive line to whichever side Miller lines up on during pass protection. We will utilize one of the backs as an additional blocker, or throw a chip and serve as a checkdown option. We'll run a couple of draws and screens to limit how much aggressiveness OKC's defensive line has, and we're going to do what we can to ensure Andrew Luck has as clean of a pocket as possible.

Take Playaction Shots- Patrick Peterson is a top notch cornerback, but he can't cover both Jeffery and Cooks at the same time. We will be liberal with our shots at whichever player doesn't draw Peterson, and we plan on utilizing a variety of rub routes against man, and flood routes against zone. We will have a man in motion to try and assist Luck with what the defense will be showing. Ultimately, we want to be relatively balanced early on with establishing the run and the pass, but we feel that once we get into the later parts of the game and have Luck throwing in a rhythm, we can lean more on the pass, which in turn should help open up run lanes against a smaller box.

Defense
4-2-5 Nickel Defense
- While OKC has favored going 4 wide, we're still going to start out with a 4-2-5 nickel look, and we'll be using a mixture of Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone with this defensive set (70-30 Zone-Man). Adoree Jackson will primarily in the slot, and Tre'Davious White will cover Adam Thielen in any man coverage, although we'll still have him follow Thielen if he motions in zone. Tony Jefferson will come down into the box when we need to present a 7 man front. Wesley Woodyard will be utilized in a spy role on Cam Newton, to help eliminate any run options that Newton tries to run, and close in to bring him down if he starts to scramble away from the pass rush. Jerome Baker will handle the running back out of the backfield; if the back stays in the block, he will come with the pass rush. Jefferson will handle any tight end they throw at us.

Cover 2+3 Zone (70-30 Zone-Man)- We're going to lean on zone coverage for the majority of the game, but we do want to mix up enough Man coverage to keep Newton guessing as to what we are doing. We will use Cover 2 with our safeties taking the deep zones the majority of the time, and doing our best to clog up the intermediate area while trusting our defensive line to generate pressure. Cover 3 will be used when we feel it is a passing situation, or OKC has a longer down and distance. When we run our man coverage, we'll keep at least 1 safety deep at all times (which will be McCourty). Tre'Davious White will shadow Adam Thielen, and we'll have McCourty give more assistance to Malcolm Butler outside. We know Cam can make some fantastic throws, but our goal is to throw enough variations in coverage to confuse him at the snap to allow our defensive line to get home.

Keep the Defensive Line Coming- We welcome back Khalil Mack for this matchup, we took it cautious but he should be back to full strength. With him and Myles Garrett coming off the edges, we hope to make Cam have PTSD flashbacks to Miller and Ware in the Super Bowl. For our interior, we're going to use 6 different interior linemen to keep everyone fresh and constantly rushing at full speed, whether to pressure Cam Newton into making a bad decision or blowing up run lanes. We're going to stick with just 1 gap responsibilities and collapse the pocket as quickly as possible.

Summary:
Offensively, we come out 3 wide and two backs, giving us the freedom to run or pass based on what Andrew Luck sees the defense giving him. We'll be using many different formations out of this personnel set, to avoid being predictable. We are going to make sure we identify where Von Miller is pre-snap, and do everything we can to neutralize his impact. We'll be taking plenty of play action shots throughout the game to take advantage of any mistakes the defense gives us.

Defensively, we throw a lot of zone at OKC, relying on our defensive front to generate pressure on Newton and clogging up passing lanes as much as possible. We'll still use man from time to time, to frustrate Newton's defensive reads, and Jefferson will come down into the box to give us a 7 man box if we need more help stopping the run.

Nick Chubb is the starting back. I'm confused by your statement. How else will our featured play action shots work without a running game?

I think he wanted you to feature the run more which I agree with as the Louisiana lb crew are more cover backers

On the other side I think he underestimates your lb in the run game but putting Gordon in motion one on one's should work for him

In the end I think rushing five every play is gonna leave the middle of the field open with only one deep safety and while pp7 should be fine I think Samuel gets some damage done early before adjustments

He and the run game seem like after thoughts. You literally mention your FB more than Chubb.

So it seems like it's more of a formatting issue from my behalf. I had done primary formation and two feature highlights on offense. I'll make it more clear what the overall expectation is from the running game and passing game independently in the future.

I actually meant to vote for OKC, please take this into account.

I think more of a point needed to be made of Mack lining up over Moses, who's hobbled and would probably get eaten alive. I think Bakhtiara can at least hold Mack, while Garrett would win, it wouldn't be to the same devastating effect.

Conversely, I think Kush & Dawkins struggle immensely against the Miller & Heyward tandem and even if OKC's linebacker group isn't amazing, it's good enough along with that secondary to hold Jeffrey and Cooks in check. The lack of a safety valve at TE/RB or even a great slot receiver hurts IC a lot here given that issue on the OL.

In the end I think Newton does enough to get OKC a tough fought win.
