Long Beach Leprechauns

Offense

Today we’ll be looking to run a 60/40 run pass offense against Gotham defense. In order to do that, we will use a lot of heavier packages with Janovich, a 6th OL (mainly George Fant, a role in which he excels IRL) or an additional tight end, subbing out Humphries and/or a RB in the process. We do that for three reasons:

·         We have only 3 WRs active so we need to go with a more heavy approach this week

·         Gotham defense, especially without Foster, is pretty subpar against the run

·         This is the strength of our team

We will use our classic zone blocking schemes but we will try to run aside from JJ Watt, who is obviously a force against the run. When we run to his side of the field, we will use a more classic power run blocking scheme, with Watt double teamed.

Expect McCaffrey to get around 55% of the carries, Ingram 40% and Crowell the remaining 15%. In addition to that, we will have some designed QB runs for Aaron Rodgers, as well as some options, as we want to use his mobility against slower LBers.

In the passing game too we want to use our RBs, especially McCaffrey, a lot. Gotham doesn’t have a player on defense aside from Rhodes and Howard who can cover McCaffrey. IMcCaffrey will be used in the backfield, outside, or in the slot as we want to move him around and put Gotham D in tough spots. If McCaffrey is manned up by a corner not named Norman, then we will just run the ball on a lighter front or we will slide him outside, putting Humphries in the slot, where he’s pretty good, vs Norman who doesn’t like to play inside. Ingram will be involved as well, to a lesser extent. With a lot of focus on McCaffrey, we expect to get 1vs1 matchups we like for Georges Kittle, who will also get a lot of looks in the passing game. McCaffrey and Kittle should open things up for Hopkins, who will likely draw Rhodes in coverage. While we respect Rhodes, we think Hopkins as a matchup proof WR and we will feed him if he doesn’t see double coverage

In the passing game too expect to see additional help for Watt. Depending on the play, it might be a TE chip, a TE (likely our TE2 more than Kittle) or FB staying to block, Georges Fant as a sixth OL or a RB (mostly Ingram) staying in pass pro. We will also keep an eye on Chris Jones, who has a lot of ups and downs but can be dangerous as a pass rusher. We will call some bootlegs on Robert Quinn side to get away from the pressure that Jones and Watt can bring in.

Defense

Gotham offers an unspectacular but very solid offense and we will try to adjust in consequence. We will trust our front 6 to hold on against the run, especially our DL who’s very solid against the run. Reader takes A and B gaps in the strong side, Williamson the C gap, and the end the D gap on this side. On the other side, Reed takes the A gap, Schobert the B gap and the other end the C gap.

In coverage we will alternate between man coverage (50%), cover 3 (25%) and press cover 2 (25%)

We will use mostly press man coverage, with Trumaine on Thomas, Roby on Sanders and Budda in the slot. If Gotham motions its receivers, we will keep Trumaine and Roby outside and they will just switch assignments to keep our coverage hidden. Roby will get help over the top from Matthieu against Sanders. Avery Williamson gets the TE/FB and Joe Schobert gets Breida. In 2RB sets, Williamson subs out for McDonald (or Whitehead) and Collins plays LB next to Schobert.

In cover 3, Trumaine and Roby get the outside zones. In cover 2, we will use press coverage too to disguise our scheme. If Roby and Budda happen to be out, Breeland takes a starting spot. If both are out, Honey Badger slides in the slot, McDonald (or Whitehead if also out) plays SS and Landon Collins plays FS

Landon Collins (or McDonald, or Whitehead in case of injuries) will be moved around like a chess piece. He’s gonna have deep assignments on the other side of Mathieu, drop in the middle to clear the area of any run and catch opportunities for Landry, blitz or he will compensate a blitz. Overall, we’re likely to blitz on around 30% of the plays, especially on 3rd downs, as we want to manufacture pressure against a solid OL. We will mostly blitz inside to put AJ Cann (if he plays) or Pouncey on a 1vs1 matchup against a bigger DT.

To keep everyone fresh, we will have some rotation, mostly inside where we’re confident in the ability of Vea and Hargrave to replace our starters without missing a beat. On passing downs, we will frequently line up with Jordan and Hargrave inside, Flowers and Preston Smith outside and Brown in for Williamson at LB, to bring pressure on Wentz

Gotham Gashslayers

OFFENSE - 3WR/TE/RB - Single Back Set

Balanced 60:40 pass:run.  Feature Breida out of the backfield.  Wentz will take what the defense gives him, will look to target Landry often to move the chains.  Double Cam on passing downs.

DEFENSE - 34 Hybrid Cover 2

Focus on limiting McCaffrey/Ingram production, Cunningham SPY on McCaffrey.  Blitz often on Rodgers, trust our CBs in man on outside.

Long Beach definitely needs to find some players to help out in the secondary, but this deep into the season, I gotta see more than just a couple of lines in a game plan.

Hey, at least I wrote one rather than having someone else do it for me.

This is true.

I really hope that we can get the bye week worked out for next season.  If not for Jazz willing to allow me to submit mine late, I wouldn't have even had the time to even submit a game plan.
