New Head Coach

David Cutcliffe (HC-Duke)

David Cutcliffe

Cutcliffe checks a lot of boxes for me.

  • He's an offensive minded guy, specifically focused on QB development.
  • He has Head Coaching experience at the college level. None in the NFL though is a little discouraging.
  • He's going to leave Pettine alone to run the defense, which I think is a positive thing.

Free Agency

UFAs

Tyrann Mathieu (Texans-Safety(3/27))

Image result for tyrann mathieu

This team needs a long term answer for at least one of the Safety spots. The 26 year old Mathieu has the potential to be that. This is a pretty damn big contract to be giving a safety when you consider the rest of the safety market.

For all the strides the defense has made this year, we're still not taking the ball away. Mathieu has been a big play maker his entire career and that's something the defense needs.

Ramon Foster (Steelers-Guard (2/10))

Image result for ramon foster

Lane Taylor is an alright option at one of the guard spots. The McCray/Bell combination hasn't been up to par. Foster brings in a steady veteran presence similar to what Jahri Evans did last year.

Foster isn't a long term starter at 32 years old, but he's at least a competent stop gap.

Resigned

Ibrahiem Campbell (1 year/1 million)

Image result for ibraheim campbell

For a low price, he offers you decent backup Safety and ST ability.

Bashaud Breeland (1 year/2.5 million)

Image result for bashaud breeland

High potential signing. I let him prove that he can still play after his recent injuries. I don't mind gambling on guys like this.

Lance Kendricks (1 year/1 million)

Image result for lance kendricks

I like having an H-Back on this team and I'd rather have Tonyan focusing on developing other skills (like running very fast down the seam and trying to catch the ball)

Reggie Gilbert/Lucas Patrick/Justin McCray (1 year/645k)

Image result for reggie gilbertImage result for lucas patrickImage result for justin mccray

Can't beat that price. All the EFRA guys are coming back.

James Looney/Jake Kumerow/Robert Tonyan (1year/570k)

Image result for james looneyImage result for jake kumerowImage result for robert tonyan

Cheap EFRA guys who you have hope can flash.

Kentrell Brice (1 year/1 million)

Image result for kentrell brice

Same as Campbell, good ST and backup Safety value. You need guys like Brice in this scheme

Jake Ryan (1 year/1.5 million)

Image result for jake ryan

We have not been great at ILB this year and considering the flow and fill responsibilities of our ILBs, I'd like to have Ryan back if he isn't going to cost anything.

Muhammad Wilkerson (1 year/5 million)

Image result for muhammad wilkerson

Same contract as last year. This scheme requires length and athleticism to succeed on the inside. Wilkerson brings both.

Cut

Mason Crosby (I've lost faith in him. Feel like it's time to move on)

Image result for mason crosby

Let Walk

Clay Matthews (Don't love the fit, and I think it's time to move on to the younger edge guys)

Image result for clay matthews

Randall Cobb (I like my tall slot receivers and think the future of this team at wideout has that taken into consideration)

Image result for randall cobb

Marcedes Lewis (Run blocking TE specialist who is decent at what he does, but encourages McCarthy's bad habits)

Image result for marcedes lewis

Byron Bell (I like what he offers as a backup interior guy, but it's time to get younger at this spot)

Image result for byron bell

Davon House (The Rookies are proving themselves capable players. No need to drag this out longer)

Image result for davon house

Korey Toomer (Numbers crunch at ILB. Let him find a new home.)

The Draft

1.13 Josh Allen (Edge-Kentucky)

Image result for josh allen kentuckyImage result for josh allen kentucky gif

I think Josh Allen does a lot of things well which will be very appealing to Pettine. He's a talented cover guy, shows excellent speed and flexibility going forward. Not quite as stout against the run, but he's got the length and the frame to get there.

I always hesitate to predict Edge talent before we see the athletic numbers, but I think Allen is going to be a good one. Worst case scenario he's Shea McClellin.

1. 28 Jerry Tillery (DT-Notre Dame)

Image result for jerry tilleryImage result for jerry tillery gif

I am thinking that Tillery is going to be gone long before this pick, and may even be gone before Pick #13 but after compiling a handful of mocks, he was still falling into the late 20s, so I pulled the trigger on it. I don't know what else there is to say about Tillery, he's huge, he's fast, he's long, he's strong, he shows fairly developed pass rush moves and he's really beat up on some talented offensive lines this year.

This probably seems like overkill with Clark, Daniels, and Wilkerson already here as starters and Lowry/Adams/Lancaster all capable of providing semi competent play, but I don't trust Wilkerson and it's clear Daniels isn't at his best in this look. Keep the high impact talent coming on the DL.

2. 43 Jalen Jelks (Edge-Oregon)

Image result for jalen jelksImage result for jalen jelks gif

More length and speed on the edge. Jelks is playing a ton of snaps at 3T which is horrifying to watch but may surpress his draft stock and give us some advantage. Minimally it means he's used to using his length against bigger blockers to stay clean, something we need from our Edge guys in this scheme.

Going 3/3 on front line guys probably seems excessive, but when you switch coaches, you need to get guys that fit his scheme. We rebuilt the secondary last year. Time to rebuild the front group this year.

3. 75 Kaleb McGary (OT/OG-Washington)

Image result for kaleb mcgary

Offensive Lineman who is a RT/OG type. He's got the talent to start this year at Guard and that may be where I want to play him full time. The hope in year 1 is that he can either start at RG or serve as a dependable backup RT for Bulaga, a spot that probably will see some snaps.

I like McGary, he doesn't have LT feet, but the rest of the game is pretty freaking good. He would be playing LT on a lot of college teams but Trey Adams is also on that Washington team.

4. 109 Nasir Adderley (S-North Dakota)

Image result for nasir adderley

Tramon isn't the long term answer at Safety, this team needs some new blood in that role.

Adderley's an interesting prospect, he's a small school guy that has the measurables and his coaches rave about his head. I'm not sure he's quite fast enough to be a standout FS, but if he can be a guy who's dependable at all his spots and contributes on specials, that's good value in the 4th round.

4. 127 Juan Thornhill (CB-Virginia)

Image result for juan thornhill

Thornhill has been a very solid starter at Virginia. He's not going to be a speed guy in the NFL, which might see him in more of a Micah Hyde, Dime DB role in the pros. Either way, that's a role this team needs. We've had a ton of crap DBs playing snaps this year. Stop me if you've heard that before.

5. 148 Cole Tracy (K-LSU)

Image result for cole tracy

Crosby's cut, we need a replacement.

Tracy is a stud. Plus it gives us two kick specialists with an average apparent age of 12.5

6. 188 Rodney Anderson (RB-Oklahoma)

Image result for rodney anderson

Aaron Jones should be eating a lot of snaps and Williams can contribute in the short yardage blocking role. This team still doesn't have a guy that can line up in either the slot or the backfield. Anderson fits that role to some extent. It's difficult to evaluate him as a runner, but as an athlete and a pass catcher I like him a lot.

The big knock on Anderson and the only reason he's available this late is that he can't stay healthy. If he's playing seven or eights snaps per game, I think he could add a dimension to the offense.

6. 206 Bobby Evans (OT/OC-Oklahoma

Image result for bobby evans oklahoma

Evans is an interesting guy in that he's put up some pretty impressive tape without really having a bunch of NFL tools. It's hard to see him as a Tackle in the pros, but I think he'll find a long term home as an interior backup.

7. 230 Alec Ingold (FB-Wisconsin)

Image result for alec ingold wisconsin

Here's my homer pick, for two reasons. One, I hate that we don't have a true full back for short yardage carries and lead blocking. Two, I like Badgers.

Watching Kendricks lead block can be frustrating. Watching Jones gets short yardage power snaps makes me furious. Hopefully Ingold can offer help for both problems. This is totally an UDFA pickup, but I didn't want to go small school spelunking.

Terrible:

A college retread HC.

Wasting two picks on a Kicker and a FB.

We've got money in Free Agency for the first time and you bring back a bunch of scrubs and an offensive lineman. Honey Badger is the only good part of this.

Terrible is right. You forgot D. Lawrence and Clowney in FA.

I'm actually gonna be kinda interested to see what's done with this team in Free Agency this year. We've got a lot of cap space and a lot of empty spots on the roster.

38 million to spend, minus 8 for rollover and draft picks leaves you with 30:

Current Roster of:

We badly need interior lineman and Safeties.

I'd love for us to get 2-3 decent to good Defensive players in FA. This defense is so damn young,  I think it's time to get  more vets on it. I know we always go defense hard every year early in the draft, but I want Gute to really bring in depth to the D through FA this year.

Offense would concern me, but I think EQ and MVS can become strong starters in the league and GMo is steady. Foster would be the best RG we've had since Lang.

Defensively I feel the same way about your depth chart as I do most actual Packers teams in August. Looks great, can't wait to be starting Tyler Lancaster and Tony Brown in December after the decimation hits.

Don't know a lot about Cutcliffe, but my initial thoughts would be very disappointed.

Matthieu and Foster would be really nice additions.

Draft looks solid.  Would like a TE at some point to start to develop, been an issue for multiple years and continuing to bypass it would be frustrating.

There could be 14 competent CBs on this roster and we'd still be playing Tony Brown and Lenzy Pipkins in December. It's inevitable.
