First from a practical standpoint, they didn't want to have anything to do with the EU. In the EU, Han and Leia have twins- Jacen and Jaina- and a younger son Anakin. Second, Ben probably goes back to Ben Kenobi. In the old EU Palps was screwing with the force and Anakin being born was the force screwing back. It's a nice little nod that the skywalker line as a whole fulfills their purpose while also leaving a future figure in place.
