Crazy haul for Mantha.

Yeah definitely a top return for Detroit. I thought the Caps overpaid. Vrana and Mantha are both streaky, and while Mantha might have a higher upside (and signed longer), I'm not sure the difference is a 1st.

They aren't dissimilar players, so Caps better hope Lavi can tap into Mantha's potential (which is significant).

It's definitely a worthy return for someone in Detroit's shoes. I honestly thought Vrana was significantly younger than Mantha but, holy hell, Mantha is younger than I thought and Vrana is older lmao. Still, Vrana's proven to be a top 6 winger so, as you said, I'm not sure the difference between the two is a premium pick PLUS another second.

Keep in mind this is the same forward that has had the same issues in two franchises. Issues with committing to two-way play and disinterest when the puck isn't on his stick. Torts gets a lot of crap, but Maurice and the Jets tried their hardest to get Laine to commit to playing some semblance of a team game. He goes through games without trying in board battles or playing in a system.

Then add to the fact he wants to be the focal point on offense and one of the highest paid players on the team. That doesn't cut it in the modern NHL. Hey maybe he changes with another change of scenery but I'm not paying Jarmo's asking price.

Sounds much like Jessi Puljujarvi. He’s a much improved player after his time away from the NHL.

You're 100% correct on that. That was Pulju's game before going back to Finland. To Pulju's credit, he really matured when he went back. He figured out what he needed to do to succeed in the NHL and worked on it. Maclellan and eventually Hitchcock both took crap for trying to get him to play that way, but like Torts they were right. Fortunately for the Oilers, Pulju was on his ELC and at that point didn't have that much success in the NHL so he needed to change. Laine I'm less confident about.
