What You Need to Know About Foles and the Bears

Matt Nagy traded a 4th round pick to give his backup 2 million more per year than Chase Daniels made in 2019.

Foles has a 3 year 24 million dollar deal, not a 3 years at 24 million each year deal. Jacksonville paid him 30+ million for 2019 but that deal is gone now.

  • Yes, he has escalators if he becomes the starter but they won't get high unless he wins playoff games or goes to the pro bowl.
    • The max possible value of the deal as a full time starter is about 3 years and 42 million. (per Spotrac)
  • Note: Because this is Foles and never again will he get the 2016 Jeff Fisher treatment, there are out clauses for both Foles and the Bears.

Here are the 5 years of Nick Foles coming off the bench:

  • 2012 as a rookie on a 3-7 team  he got his first games and he went 1-5.
    • He played about as well as Michael Vick
    • 1-5 as a rookie starter

  • 2013 as Vick's backup after a 2-4 Vick got hurt in the first half of a week 6 game vs the Giants
    • Foles led them on a 2 minute drill FG drive extending the lead to 16-7 and then finished out the game, a 36-21 win.
    • He went 8-2 the following 11 games, missing the Giants rematch with a concussion (Vick got hurt again, Barkley played, it was not pretty)
    • He lost a close playoff game where he walked off the field with a lead
      • Lets call that an 8-3 record or 9-3 when he was called on to play

  • 2016 as the backup to Alex Smith
    • Smith got hurt vs Indy in week 6 and Foles played brilliantly in a win.
    • Foles had a decent game as the starter the net week in another win.
    • KC went 8-6 when Foles was not needed and 2-0 when he was needed and they made the playoffs in part because he did his job.
      • Call him 1-0 as a starter or 2-0 when called on to play

  • 2017 as the backup to Carson Wentz
    • He made 1 play late to secure a 1st down in a stunning game in LA where the Eagles just lost the possible league MVP
    • He went 2-0 in the next 2 games
      • good - 4 TDs vs NY
      • bad - The Christmas game where he outplayed Carr in a QB stink fest
    • The next game was a week 17 exhibition game after securing HFA for the playoffs.
      • It was 13 throws of U G L Y in a scrimmage.
    • He then won 3 playoff games with 100+ rating in all 3 and took SB MVP honors
      • You can break these down as 1 bad weather game where he outplayed Matt Ryan in a defensive struggle and 2 all-time brilliant games if you like.
    • Call him 5-1 on his record or 5-0 when his team needed him  (the Rams play was nice but it was just one throw)

  • 2018 part 1:
    • Wentz was not healthy yet like many on the team and Foles went 1-1 with some scrubs on offense
      • Look at the players targeted, watch the games, call me a witch, do what you like about these 2 games.
        • He was actually pretty bad in the win and had a heck of a game in the loss
  • 2018 part 2:
    • Foles took over a 6-7 team that had to win out to make the playoffs
      • He went 87-133 (77%) for 962 yards (7.23 ypa) 6 TDs and 3 picks for a 108.4 rating.
      • The Eagles went 3-0 in those games, Chicago knocked out Minnesota, and it was playoff time.
      • They played an ugly defensive battle in Chicago where Foles led them on a late TD drive on 4th down.
        • The game was ultimately decided on the famous double-doink
      • They played another ugly game in New Orleans.
        • The bad: Foles had Ertz open to extend a 17-0 lead to 24-0
        • The good: He drove the team to the red zone with a chance to take the lead late before Alshon gave the ball to the Saints
      • Combined he was 5-2 in 2018

Add that up and he's 21-5 as a backup when his team calls on him since his 2nd year in the league.

If you want to count his rookie year then he is 22-10

If you only want to count starts and also count the fake game then he is 20-11

Does anyone really think a 4th round pick and an 8 million cap hit  is too much for this 31 year old QB?

For a team that should have blown everything up and tried rebuilding, yes. Why give up any money or draft picks for a guy who isn’t a franchise QB?

He will be gone next season along with Trubisky and Nagy.

Can you give us a list of teams which are allowed to try to win this year and which ones are under your tank orders?

Yes.  I believe he's the highest paid backup QB by a hefty margin.

He's 4th now and will be 6th if Fitz and Tyrod go to the bench later this year.

You have heard of Jacoby Brissett, right?  22 million is likely more than 8 million (depending on your beliefs, I guess)

He's not the highest paid backup QB and he is the one of (if not) the best backup QB in the league.

He has an option in his contract to test FA in the offseason, but even if he stays he gives the Bears the option to draft a QB in the 1st round next year and let him sit and learn while Foles starts.
