patriotsheatyan
What are the most dominant multi-year stretches of QB play you have seen? No career wise, but peak wise. Like Favre from 95-97, Rodgers from 10-14, etc...

SkippyX
1984 to 1986 Marino His rating over that period was 95.1 The league averages were 76.1, 73.5, and 74.1 He put up 122 TDs in 3 years. The #2 guy had 80 passing TDs (Dave Krieg) He had a 16, 3, and 19 TD lead in those 3 years over the #2 guy (one year it was Boomer instead of Krieg) The 48 in 1984 broke the record by 12 That record lasted for 20 years. The only one who got close was Marino again in 1986 with 44 TDs. His 5084 passing yards in 1984 was a record for 27 years until Brady and Brees broke it in 2011. Number 2 on the list was his 1986 season Dan Fouts was the only one within 450 yards of his record until Moon got close in the early 90s. The 1985 Bears gave up a 51.2 passer rating that season. (sub-50 if you don't count Marino) Marino torched them for a 108.6 rating From October through the Super Bowl only one team scored at least 20 points on the Bears. It was the Dolphins with 38. 101 points allowed in those other 14 games (7.2 per game), 38 to Marino. SkippyX
Marino 1984 and 1986 were like Manning having his 2004 and 2013 seasons in the same 3 year period. He did not win a Super Bowl but he did have a 420 yard 4 TD AFCCG to get to his Super Bowl. Edited October 3, 2020 by SkippyX

Young's 92-94 is the most dominant 3 year stretch for my money. Young actually let the NFL in pass rating 6 times from 1992 to 1998. The only other QB in NFL history that has come close I think was Roger Staubach who did it in the 1970's, a remarkable feat itself. Young didn't have that long of a career compared to today's standards, but that 7, arguably 8 year stretch was as dominant as any QB within the same amount of years played. BTW it's not secret that I'm not a huge fan of passer rating, but when you lead the league in it 6 times that's still incredible. TecmoSuperJoe
Also, Dan Fouts from 1979 to 1983 lead the NFL in Y/G. 1979: 255.1 1980: 294.7 1981: 300.1 1982: 320.3 1983: 297.5 Those numbers would be very high today. Putting them up 40 years ago was impressive.

I will never understand why Priest Holmes did not win this MVP (see 2005 and 2006) Manning had 29 passing TDs, McNair had 24, and Holmes had 27 rushing TDs. 2004 was a historic year. Full credit. In 2005 he was 1 or 1A with Carson Palmer at QB but Sean Alexander was the monster year RB MVP. In 2006 he was the best QB but Tomlinson was clearly the best player. In summary of 2003-2006, best QB by a long way with a historic season in 2004. He led the league in rating 3 times, yards once, and TDs once. In 2007 he had 19 less TDs, about 800 less yards, and a passer rating 19.2 points lower than Brady. Manning was 4th in TDs, 7th yards, and 4th in rating In 2008 Brady did not even play and Manning was 5th in TD passes and 6th in passing yards. He was also 5th in passer rating. His 2008 award is an actual joke. Warner had him on yards, TDs, and rating. Warner's 9-7 on Arizona was as worthy as taking that Cadillac team to 12-4 yet again. In 2009 he was 2nd in yards, 2nd in TDs, and 6th in rating. Brees should have been the MVP. In summary of 2007-2009... Hell No! At no point between 07-09 was he ever the best QB. He led the league in nothing in this period unless you count Charlie Batch Stats.(QBR 🤣)
SkippyX
Here is another way to compare Manning 03-06 with 07-09 to see if they really belong together. 03-06 (great play) Manning 2003 - 119th highest season passer rating McNair was T-105th Manning 2004 - 2nd highest season passer rating Culpepper 19th Brees 49th McNabb T-52nd The rules were relaxed for QBs this year after (direct response to a pair of very ugly 2003 Championship games) This takes nothing away from his incredible year, just explaining why so many high ratings in 2004 Manning 2005 - 61st highest season passer rating Palmer was 96th Manning 2006 - T-98th highest season passer rating Brees was T-175th 07-09 (popularity contest) Manning 2007 - T-133rd highest season rating Brady was 5th highest this year Manning 2008 - T-203rd highest season rating Warner was T-169th Manning 2009 - 109th highest season rating Brees was 25th
