  • Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) announced on Monday that 80 percent of the state’s 12 and older population is at least partially vaccinated. It’s the first state in the nation to reach that milestone, Scott said, and will allow him to lift all remaining pandemic restrictions.
  • The World Health Organization warned Monday that the Group of Seven’s pledge to share 1 billion doses with low-income countries would not be enough and has not come soon enough to stave off the fast-moving coronavirus.
  • Israel on Tuesday ended its requirement that masks be worn indoors, as the country’s rate of new coronavirus cases continues to decline after a massive inoculation program earlier this year.
  • The Japanese government is reportedly considering putting Tokyo in a “quasi-state of emergency” during the 2020 Olympic Games to control infections.
  • A Washington Post analysis found that states with higher coronavirus vaccination rates now have far fewer virus cases, while states with lower vaccination rates have significantly higher hospitalization rates.
  • The United States reported a seven-day rolling average of 14,393 new cases on Monday, a slight decrease from the previous week. The number of daily reported deaths has fallen by about 28 percent.

Just something that caught my attention:

Lessons from the tightest labor markets

There are still millions of eager and eligible potential employees in the United States, but the tightest labor markets make it clear that employers have already snapped up the most obvious candidates. If employers want to ramp up to meet post-pandemic demand, they’re being forced to search harder for employees and perhaps offer bonuses or higher wages, said Pardue, the Gusto economist.

“The pandemic rocked labor markets in several important ways,” said University of California at San Diego economist Jeffrey Clemens. “It broke many linkages between workers and their pre-pandemic employers, and it introduced a broad set of factors that make it less attractive for people to be in the jobs that they previously held.”

According to Clemens, those factors include the health risks inherent to in-person work, expanded employment benefits and expanded responsibilities outside work, such as child care and elder care.

Vaccinated players: Ice cream Fridays
Unvaccinated players: Hotels suites will be substituted with mine shafts. The black lung will kill you if COVID doesn't.

Silver lining to the NFLPA being completely toothless is that the NFL isn't gonna have any compliance issues. Someone get the Sam Darnold backpedal response on camera please.

You would think someone like Darnold would understand given that he missed games in 2019 because of mono. But then again, maybe he is that stupid.

Also one of the few times the NFL strict protocols make sense. Get vaccinated or live with the annoying restrictions and screw your team over in the process.

Shouldn't that be expanded unemployment benefits?

Possibly. But the article also talks about employers trying to bring in prospective workers through various incentives like higher pay and better benefits.

I mean if we're being really honest here, the protocols being that stringent is something the NFLPA could have destroyed in an argument if they wanted to. They were originally designed when states were in lockdown and there was virtually zero immunity. Now somewhere around 2/3rds of people are vaccinated. The odds of a full blown outbreak are lower regardless, and you could very reasonably argue that the protocols should be relaxed in line with that.

If the NFLPA was smart, they probably gave into this in exchange for something else and we just don't know what that is.

In this case, I’m glad that the NFLPA did not destroy the argument. And I hope they actually got something useful in return.
