Smartest guys in the world if it works. If it doesn’t then they look like the Raiders.

But for them to have this much faith in the guy means he showed out in partice now just have to see it on game day

He showed out in practice against our weak DTs.

For people comparing this to the Waller signing, that was made after 5 games where he had 37 catches for 359 yards... on pace for 100+ and 1000+ which put him in the elite class of TE, albeit on a limited sample.

This seems way premature. Why not have a camp battle first? You can still extend him before the RS starts. Now he’s basically been anointed as the starter without earning it.

Good thing about this is we will find out soon enough. Cable been the one coach aside from the TE coach who left to actually trust in development of young players so we’ll see

James has 1 start and has played 116 snaps at C. IIRC, he was an OT in college. Huge leap of faith with him, I don't see why we couldn't have waited until during or after the season to extend him, he's only making $800k this year.

James scouting report coming into the league:

Quote

Stiff, slow tackle prospect who will have to bump down to guard due to a lack of functional athleticism and overall pass protection talent. James possesses decent power and an NFL-worthy frame, but he struggles to secure and sustain his blocks due to his slow feet and narrow base. He could find himself in camp as a free agent, but his lack of consistency in both his pass and run blocking makes a roster spot a long-shot.

Because they think he's going to be good and it will be more expensive at this point. They're trusting what they see at practice.

and that one start and those snaps were not even good.

if they really want to get ink on paper before his value shot up (likely would not be the case at least a few games of the season as a trial run), at the very least should have waited until maybe the week before the RS, see if he wins the starting spot cleanly. see if he's actually any good, and not just "better than Martin".

this is really stunning. sure maybe he becomes a good above average center, but its impossible to know that's the case now. Tom Cable is the same numbnut who went into a season with Jared Veldheer at starting C, only to fail miserably in one game and go play starting LT the rest of the way through. i'm sure he "saw in practice" that veldheer was good enough to play C. then what happened?

With his extension he's the 19th highest paid center in the league going into the season. He'd have to play at a Pro Bowl / All-Pro level to get significantly more than 4.25M APY.

I actually think it makes sense to re-sign now if they are that convinced he’s going to be a capable starter, get him signed up to a reasonable deal which will aid us down the line.

I’m intrigued as to what Martin got though, cos surely he is the backup now?
