NYRaider
Not one person said it should've been Luka, lol. Brian Windhorst: "No one in this draft has a higher ceiling than Ayton." I was talking about the smaller draftniks on Twitter I follow. Ranking an athletic big > a playmaking wing like Luka was just dumb and that's not hindsight. He was the better prospect. So every major sports publication known to man kind including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, The Athletic, CBS Sports, and The Ringer had Ayton number one but Luka was clearly the better prospect? If that's the case why did he fall to #3? And why did the Hawks give him up for Trae Young a future pick? Luka has become a great player and was a very good prospect but he wasn't considered a generational talent at the time he entered the league. A lot of people had him ranked below Marvin Bagley, lol. I think Deandre Ayton being the consensus #1 player had a lot to do with Joel Embiid's success in the league. Analysts/teams saw him fall to #3 and become a much better player than Wiggins or Parker. And as a guy that compared pretty closely to Embiid they didn't want to be wrong again so they ranked him #1. The same thing happened for Cade this year as teams/analysts saw Luka fall to #3 then become a better player than Ayton or Bagley. Fran Frachilla said teams missed on Luka, you don't want to make that same mistake twice... You also realize that the Igor Kokoskov was the Suns head coach at the time, who had coached Luka for the Slovenian national team, and passed on him for Ayton, right? Vlade Divac who was the Kings GM at the time was Serbian and had known Luka's dad for years before he was ever a draft prospect. Both of those teams had close personal ties to Luka and passed on the chance to draft him, but he was the consensus #1 guy?

But if they play well then they're automatically a future HOFer, lol.

NYRaider
Also @KhanYouDigIt I don't think summer league ball is really a setting that a player like Franz Wagner is going to thrive. His appeal in the draft was that he could be a super role player. Make the right passes, play good team defense, etc. Summer league is straight chaos. Not gonna go back and forth with you but at the time Ayton was considered by the MSM as the clear cut #1 player in the draft. As I argued with the Suns fan about the other day, a lot of that had to do with the fact that ESPN had pushed the "Ayton is the best player in the draft" all college basketball season and no one had really ever seen Luka play. Just as we saw this year with Cade being pushed as the best player in the draft all year while Jalen didn't get much love playing in the G-League. And last year with Edwards being pushed as the best prospect all year with no one really talking about LaMelo because he wasn't playing on ESPN.

I do remember it, I'm saying Vlade was well aware of who Luka was for years because he knew his dad and passed on him for Marvin Bagley. The Suns had his national coach as their head coach and passed on him for Deandre Ayton. The Hawks could've kept him and preferred Trae Young. OKC reportedly offered SGA and #6 for #1 and the Pistons said no. The Hawks traded Luka for Trae Young and Cam Reddish, lol.
