The NBA draft is about potential and projection, not what a player currently is rather what you think they can become down the line. Emoni and his camp have just made some terrible decisions that have stunted his development. The first misstep was pulling out of HS/AAU ball to play for his dad's fake HS team. Followed by reclassifying despite not being draft eligible to play at Memphis under Penny Hardaway. His best bet will be to leave Memphis after this season, play in the G-League, get out of the limelight and just go to work. I think Cam Reddish is a fairly accurate comparison for him. Cam Reddish was a great athlete who was still sort of unknown because he had the whole "third option" excuse on that Duke team. Bates is the kind of guy who needs to actually produce and shoot well in college because he doesn't have measurables to fall back on. Cam Reddish had his opportunities at Duke, he just wasn't very good. He also wasn't very good during his first two seasons in the NBA. His dad pulling him out of HS and AAU ball to play for his fake HS then sending him to Memphis with Penny was terrible for his development. Seems like neither produce a lot of wow highlight plays like monster blocks and dunks. To the people that watch them, do they have the ability to do these things, is it scheme related? Seems like all their points are scored with 3s, mid range jumpers, and layups. Am I just spoiled because of past prospects like Zion? Both guys are big, long, strong, and skilled but neither is a plus athlete vertically.
