But wouldn't that make the holdup the Packers fault?

Not if they originally thought the Jets agreed to more compensation and then lowballed them when they went to finalized.  Florio said they were being lowballed.

What are the benefits of doing it sooner? Is june 1 the deadline?

Not sure too lazy to look it up but we have to pick up his option.  Think it's like May or something.  Advantage of doing it now is for planning purposes.  We can afford to wait.  Jet's not so much.  If true they are trying to jerk us around.  Hurts them more than us.  Hey they can go after Matt Ryan he's a FA 😁

Obviously if the Jets changed what they are offering, the Packers would be justified in holding up the deal.

Gute .. hold onto your nards and stay strong.  The Packers have options at the qb position and the Jets don't ... they have NOTHING at the qb position.  Do not get low balled and get the compensation you want/expect for Rodgers and then move on.  In this game of chicken you have  the upper hand.

I think the Jets have been trying to push a narrative that they are going to land Aaron and it's not going to cost them a 1st round pick.  Packers may be saying, you're wrong, it's going to cost you a 1st round pick.

Ya thats why i asked you fine FF folks. Unless we are offloading his cap hit and want to spend that on a FA, I dont see the benefit. At this point most of the good FAs are signed anyways.

With mike white gone, the jets are staring at wasting a year of their young core. With lazard now for 3-4 years at 11 mil.

Worst case, they ought to be considering Lamar jackson and the ravens ought to be in play for rodgers.

"With Rodgers habitually absent from the early phases of the offseason program, it’s not as if he’ll be in the building between now and April 27. And with a $58.3 million option bonus that has a lengthy exercise period (the Packers can pick it up at any point from tomorrow until Week One), Rodgers has a very manageable cap number into September.

Basically, they get the benefit of the multi-year proration without having to pay the $58.3 million." -florio

That seems to be a favorable contract structure for the packers.

The Jets and Packers should have had contingent trades worked out last week.  Which high picks would be involved,

Obviously there needed to be at least some contingencies.  If Rodgers indicates a lean towards two years, versus leaning retire-after-one, or whatever.   Jets shouldn't have made a hard-firm offer only to find that Rodgers was still leaning one-year-only, or something.  Perhaps contingency on Rodges reworking the contract to some extent?  The original deal was structured to Aaron+Packers mutual advantage; the Jets might benefit by restructuring some?  So maybe a 2nd becomes a 3rd if Rodgers refuses any restructure, or whatever.

But the Jets would have been nuts if they didn't have the deal basically structured days ago, before letting it get to the point it is now.

The Jets are boxed in right now. There are really no good QB options out their besides Rodgers. They can't take another swing at drafting someone since the owner wants to win now. They probably don't have the draft capital to get up and get one of the 4 QB's either.

The owner opened his mouth and put the GM in a pickle.
