The Vikings announced on Wednesday that they agreed to terms with LB Troy Reeder.

Reeder, who turns 29 in September, started his career with the Rams — helping the club win Super Bowl LVI. But he switched his home locker room at SoFi Stadium in 2022, playing for the Chargers. He was on the field for 68 percent of the Chargers’ special teams snaps in 2022 along with six percent of defensive snaps.

Reeder has been durable, as he hasn’t missed a game since making the Rams out of 2019 training camp. Reeder’s recorded 241 total tackles with 11 tackles for loss, eight QB hits, 5.0 sacks, and two interceptions in his 66 career games.

Signing Reeder, and restructuring Hicks is interesting.

It probably removes linebacker from their early rounds board.

Does it really? Both are below average starters. I’d still value CB and DL over LB but LB has to be in the mix.

Troy Reeder is solid, was a standout on Penn State before he transferred to Delaware.  Really was good on the Rams, went to the Chargers but got no playing time for obvious reasons with Tranquill, Murray and Van Noy already there.

Honestly though the Chargers got the upgrade with Kendricks as their ILB, Reeder is just a cheap fill in especially in case they do not draft someone or if Asamoah is not that good.

Two veterans with Asamoah in a defense that is going to be utilizing a lot of nickel and dime packages.

I just don’t see them using an early pick on a linebacker. It’s maybe a day 3 target.

You’re probably right. I just wouldn’t write off any defensive player in round 1 or 3 merely due to position outside of Safety. I think it’s all still so wide open where they could go on defense.

Jordan Hicks is 31 years old and Troy reeder is probably a vet minimum signing.

that doesn’t remove anyone off the board lol.

I do like reeder as veteran lb depth though. But they still need to add to that unit and if there is a dude that drops to the third, or if they trade back from the first, ilb would still be on the board if they are the best player.

Could he just be replacing Troy Dye?

Sure, maybe....not a big deal to me. They will all go to camp and who plays the best gets the spots.

Reeder has starting experience and still in his 20s. He's the best at rushing the passer but he has enough athleticism to make a few plays here and there. He's just inconsistent with tackling. He's fine, I like it as a depth signing.

Yeah sounds like he shouldn’t start. So that leaves us with Hicks and Asamoah. Isn’t there still a need for a LB who’s a bit more physical in the run game. Thought Hicks was better in space like Asamoah and not someone you want trying to take on blockers in the run game. I get we will run a lot of nickel but that won’t be the case if teams are running the ball down our throat because we don’t have the physicality to match. The DL is a liability so the LBs better be good.

Quite the opposite. Hicks is miserable in space and actually played well around the line of scrimmage last year.

Yeah, his run stop grade was like 13th overall for LBs. HIs coverage grade was....well....it was something you don't ever want to see again.
