Who is going to trade down out of Jalen Carter to take Chase Young on bigger money contract?

I'm sure there are quite a few teams that would trade the chance to draft Carter for Young and the 16th pick.

A $38M cap hit for two DEs probably isn’t all that “semi-cost controlled”. That’d probably be the most expensive duo in the league based on cap hits in 2024 (Chandler Jones will be cut by then and Parsons/Bosa aren’t going to have big hits in Year 1).

It’s not expensive for a team that’s paying their QB $500K.

Yes it is. Having a lowly $8.5M allocated to the QB room doesn’t mean expensive cap hits are thus “cost controlled”, it just means they can afford it.

I’m not holding my breath for him to break out, but why on Earth would you not franchise him?

Commies aren’t winning the SB next year, so it’s about long term.

If you franchise and keep Young, and he breaks out, you have a great 24yr old pass rusher moving forward.

if you choose to allocate money elsewhere…. How could they recoup that potential value?

Washington could do a lot with Chase Young & the 16th pick.

...and wanting to land Jalen Carter.

Here's one hypothetical trade.

Washington trades Chase Young & 16th pick for Ravens QB Lamar Jackson on Franchise Tag. ( With no extension)

Washington then proceeds to trade Lamar Jackson to the Atlanta Falcons for the #8 overall pick. (And possibly a day 2, or 3 pick in addition)

Washington selects Jalen Carter @#8. ( Possibly adds extra draft picks)

Atlanta lands their QB in Lamar Jackson & perfect for their scheme. Gives Lamar his 200 gazillion dollar extension guaranteed money. Lamar has Kyle Pitts as his security blanket, like he had in Baltimore.

Baltimore lands Chase Young & the 16th pick in the draft for Lamar. Can give Young his 5th year option.

A 3-way trade.

Washington would rather have Carter than Lamar?

Why take a bunch of defensive lineman with high first round picks if they succeed and you aren't willing to pay them just because they all play in the same unit?

Anyway, Chase was only actually disappointing for half a season after he won DROY. It only seems like he's been terribly unproductive because he had a really poorly timed injury that wiped out 1.5 seasons.

What does Young cost long term after this contract? When is he going to play in double digit games in a season? Has he shown enough to warrant even bringing him back? How much money is he going to expect at that point that would make him want to stay in Washington over a less cash strapped team? The amount of money Washington is and will continue to put in the elite DL just isn’t sustainable to me. It looks like they project to having around $55M in cap next year, which is better than I expected but are you going to plug 1/3 of that into Young? To me, the commanders are still a ways away from adding the pieces they need to compete in the east so I just don’t know if Young should be a part of that. Unless he can play in 17 games and show something I suppose. Ultimately his highest value might be now for them in a trade with a team that hasn’t decided he doesn’t have it.

If Carter is there at 15 and knew GB would take him, would you give us 16 and Chase Young for 15?

This is what you do....

Sweat is on his final year & Young is waiting for the 5th year option.

You dangle Chase Young for trade during the draft. With the intention of drafting DT Jalen Carter.

If you can get him at #16? Great. If not, use Young to trade up to get him.

Then you either move Johnathan Allen to DE, or play Jalen Carter at DE. Both have pass rushing abilities & the speed & power to take the edge.

Then you give Sweat a new contract & lock him up. ( Or tag him, if necessary)

This gives you a D-line of Sweat, Payne, Allen & Carter for years.

Keep the strength of your team, strong.

Ace. No. This is awful.
