🔥 Pick #100 is in: Tre Tucker, WR, Cincinnati

By far my least favorite selection. I'd say WR was the one position we didn't need to draft high. Not to mention there were far better WRs available imo. A reach on position but prospect wise as well.

Here's to hoping he dominates early as a returner and molds himself a role as a deep threat + gadget plays.

I realize your not the one saying this and I’m not out to shoot the messenger.  Also thank you for providing the clip for us….

But, Tucker isn’t a 4.3 speed.  He times 4.40 at the combine.  I fully understand there’s zero real world difference between 4.40 and 4.39, as fast is fast.  But when someone says “4.3 speed” their not implying the player ran 4.39 and instead its something faster.  My point being this tweet has too much embellishment.  Tucker is certainly a play maker as a Kick Returner and slot WR, whether it be in the form of catching a deep ball or screens that he turns into long gains/TDs, catching a crossing route and getting YAC, etc but he’s NOT the BEST playmaker in this draft class.

The “in my mind” intro to the tweet definitely needed to be said because the tweet’er definitely has a vivid imagination.  I understand being excited about a player and holding them in higher regard than the consensus opinion, but there’s a limit to that before it becomes too much fluff versus reality.

And I really liked Tucker pre-draft as an optimistic 6-7th, maybe even a 5th (we always think we’ll get players a round later or at the end of the round instead of the beginning) round pick. Before we signed DeAndre Carter I was very supportive and vocal about adding a speedy WR to this team.  People said 1) we don’t throw deep in this offense 2) we signed Dorsett.  Even after the Carter signing I wanted to spend a late round pick on a smaller, speedy like Tucker or Derius Davis, TCU or Rakim Jarrett, Maryland, etc.  I would have loved to get Tank Dell, Houston or Marvin Mims, Oklahoma in round 3 but that was too much draft capital to expend for us.  Even spending a 4 on Jayden Reed, Michigan State or Tyler Scott, Cincinnati was bit too rich for us IMO.  I felt the sweet spot would be anywhere from a 5th on Trey Palmer, Nebraska to the later round projected prospects including Tucker that I listed previously.

I say all that to reiterate the fact I was totally behind drafting a Playmaking slot WR/Return Specialist for quite some time.   I’m glad we drafted Tucker, but I think 1) we drafted him way too high and he’s have been available at later of our picks 2) we lost out on the opportunity to draft a better player and at a position of far greater need 3) in the event we missed out on Tucker there were more than a handful of comparable players we could have drafted or signed as UDFAs 4) if we drafted someone else at #100 and lost out on Tucker at a later pick, and thus would have to go with one of the other prospects later on in the draft or as a UDFA, the difference in talent relative to the importance of that players role on the team was far less of a loss then what would be gained by drafting a different position (ie draft Dawand Jones / Blake Freeland at #100 and sign UDFA Rakim Jarrett)

Again, thank you for taking the time to show us the highlight clip and I’m not trying to knock you at all.

I just dislike when guys like this Tweet’er highly embellish reality.

I didn't like the value of this pick, but I don't hate it as much as most.

This kid has field tilting speed. He explodes in space.

JMD called a lot of bubble screens and end arounds. He likes to work a lot of pre-snap movement in his offense. Tucker gives them a slot option that is a threat on those plays. And ST value as a KR/PR guy.

He's a guy we will likely look back favorably on in a couple years imo.

Yeah JMD panicked he clearly has a plan and wanted a speedy playmaker I'm not surprised because I said several times I heard he was in love with Marvin Mims and I thought if Mims had been on the board he would take him here.

From back in March

Quote

Former UC wide receiver Tre Tucker is getting draft buzz from NFL teams.

Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy says NFL teams are targeting Tucker as a mid-round pick "they can hit on" following his Pro Day exploits.

"NFL teams needing slot help are targeting Tre Tucker as mid-rounder they can 'hit' on," Nagy tweeted. "One scout texted us saying he got Tucker at 4.33 & 4.36 (seconds) at yesterday’s pro-day. Also put up 16 reps (on the bench press) at 182 pounds, making him one of strongest lb-for-lb prospects in ‘23 draft."

Hand times pro day 40s are always highly favorable to the players… .05 to .07 at minimum.

But he’s a former HS wrestler and definitely a very strong player for his size, which will help him.

I don't care much about 40's, you can see Tucker's speed on the field. Similar to Chris Smith. Ran a 4.6, played much faster that at UGA.

These guys train all offseason to run the 40, perfecting technique. Guys are running sub 4.4 at record pace now. What worries me is when you don't see it on the field.

I mentioned the 40 time purely because I had previously replied mentioned to tweet that was posted that said he had 4.3 speed AND was the leagues best playmaker.

I’ve said it numerous… the times 2 40s at the combine aren’t a real representation of a players speed for their career… it’s just a snap shot In time,, they could run 4.36 the day before combine, 4.40 the day of, and 4.47 the first day of camp.

An over simplistic explanation of speed for me is:  there’s fast WR and then there’s a few guys that have that next level or have an additional gear.

While I still think it was a reach…

I do like the toughness Tucker shows… he lowers his shoulder and fights for yards when being tackled by defenders. And for such a small guy he actually is successful at it.

For about 2 years I’ve advocated for a smaller, speedy WR and use him on short and intermediate crossing routes, Those plays where the WR goes in motion across the formation and takes a short pass behind the LOS and turns upfield, etc.  if your going to use a smaller WR on these types of plays and gadget plays, sweeps, and screens it definitely helps to have a guy like Tucker who is very strong for his size.  It’s not a knock on Renfrow but I get scared when he’s about to take a big hit.

Thought these were interesting stats.

Could that be because he caught a lot of screen passes and short YAC type routes rather than deep balls or mid range routes? (I honestly don’t know).
