obviously the 9ers lost, but let’s play devils advocate and say the Defense clamped up and the 49ers won 10-7. Would you be rooting for Rivers? The Chiefs would still win? What statline do you think Rivers would put up in the Super Bowl?

He probably gets hurt 1st QT, Chris Jones also abusing a TE trying to block him 1v1. Shanny didn't learn.

I would hope even off the couch Rivers would have the veteran experience to get rid of the ball quicker on a standard PA play than Glock13 did.

Interesting thing is when did this thought process develop??? In the short amount of time between wunderkind getting hurt and Josh Johnson getting knocked out the game???

If he were an option beforehand, why not have him at least semi-around the team? If it’s because Rivers wouldn’t fully commit unless it was the SB, have some sort of gentlemen’s agreement where he doesn’t show up to practice but at least has the playbook to go over? Something. Expecting him to come in and run the offense in two weeks, as QB friendly as it is, seems like a bad plan.

If Purdy was healthy and good enough to beat an absolutely loaded Eagles team, then he deserves that job. A 2022 49ers Phillip Rivers is probably better than a Brock Purdy, but not off his couch. It would’ve been an ugly look if this shook out that way, IMO.

Is this a serious question? Hurts had one of the best Super Bowl QB performances ever - and still lost. How could an off-the-couch Philip Rivers do any better with 2 weeks prep?

Based on Shanahan's quote and what he said a few weeks earlier it seems like they were in contact with Rivers throughout the season in case Jimmy went down, but shelved the idea when Purdy started balling out. Then after he went down during the NFC Championship Shanahan thought offhandedly to himself while the game was still competitive that he might actually have to call Rivers now

Obviously they were only going to sign Rivers if they still somehow won that game after he got hurt

Yeah… this has some Bill Polian “we had Tom Brady with a 1st round grade” vibe to it.

Did you read the article?

Long before the San Francisco 49ers ran out of healthy QBs in their NFCCG loss to the Eagles, they had been making contingency plans for the position had they advanced to the Super Bowl.

“Now that’s stuff we talked about throughout the whole year…that was the plan most of the year.”

I think if you are trying to have a plan for not having a starting QB for the Super Bowl then Rivers is a great option. Short notice, learn a new offense let’s grab the dude that learned tons of new offenses in his career. That being said, it’s an extremely unlikely scenario all of your QB’s go down in the conference championship game and you have to sign a dude off the couch to play in the Super Bowl.

I’d put it on par with me having a plan for if I woke up tomorrow as the last Dude on earth.

That's still a bit strange to not even have him around the squad, or peak his head in every once in a while. There wasn't a whisper of Rivers all year in regards to anything. I think it would have ended up in a disaster, but I'd still take my chances over Josh Johnson surviving another game.

BTW mini sidebar: If one looks up Fairhope, Alabama pretty much all the photos show the city/town as abandoned. Kind of unsettling.
