The Broncos are strongly considering to sit Russell Wilson for the final 2 games

I dont think there is one out there this team can win with that is obtainable.

Good thing the NFL doesn't have fully guaranteed contracts like MLB.

I don't think the Broncos are concerned about winning next year. The dead cap from cutting him is going to be insane.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Everyone thought this was a good trade for both parties at the time. Let's not pretend like everyone knew Russ would fall off a cliff the minute he was traded.

Pete Carroll and the Seahawks definitely did, though. If they thought Russ still had it, they would never have traded him.

You’re right though. He was a top 10 QB at the time coming off a couple of great statistical years. I wanted Russ on the Raiders at the time after he listed Vegas as one of his “preferred destinations” - major bullet dodged.

You called it expected to be cut in March.

It’ll be interesting to see how they structure this release. Take the whole enormous dead cap hit in one go or spread it out over a couple of years?

I think you’d want to move on as quickly as possible, and you take the full $85m or whatever it is dead cap in 2024, knowing that you’ll struggle to field a competitive team, and then start fresh in 2025 with a top QB prospect from the draft and a full salary cap allowance again.

But I don’t think Sean Payton’s brain works like that and I could see his ego trying to remain competitive over a couple of years despite the big cap hits.

Edit - just seen in another thread that it doesn’t appear to be as simple as taking the full dead cap hit in one year, and it’ll need to be split somehow. So not quite as interesting a decision to be made…

That's the obvious one. My favorite was always Mike Ditka trading the entire draft class and high picks next year for Ricky Williams.

Ha, forgot about that one. Probably because it did not have the impact for the Saints that J Johnson was able to make happen in Dallas with the Walker trade. But yeah, the WIlliams trade certainly ranks up there with one of the all time worst.

Not everyone.

A few of us in the Raiders sub caught mad flak for railing against it and sorta called it. I vividly remember saying the only reason he wanted Vegas was for Ciara to his the casino circuit while he bilked us. A lot of people thought it was Russ who made the Seahawks and Pete, but it didn't take a lot of looking to see otherwise- a lot of people simy never wanted to, you know, actually look.

Real question: why is it that everytime a QB and coach separate, we have to see who “made” the other one? Not only that, but all context goes out the window. QB is aging and past their prime? Doesn’t matter. New QB with HC is backup quality? Doesn’t matter.
