He has a meek, bland personality that I never thought would be a great leader of men. He's definitely good at mixing coverages. I'm not sure how much credit he should get for the front 7 and the pass rush because Anthony Weaver and Chuck Smith are doing great work there. MacDonald basically dials up pass defenses and allows space to run the ball because Roquan cleans up any mess between the tackles. MacDonald's defenses got much better after the Roquan trade, but Roquan is an All Pro and Seattle doesn't have that kind of off-ball LB. He will have to focus much more controlling running lanes on 1st and 2nd down with Seattle than with Baltimore. Lastly, the Ravens have built up an infrastructure that has given them good to great defense for the past 25 years (only below average defenses in regular season came during injury decimated years (such as 2015, 2021). This includes draft, development, talent eval, and coaching. I guess it remains to be seen how much MacDonald benefited from that or if he is capable of creating that infrastructure in Seattle. Just an FYI but Staley didn’t have a meek bland personality at all. He was quite fiery and reminded me of the defensive version of McVay when we first hired him. Staley’s biggest flaw is he couldn’t properly communicate his schemes and concepts to the defensive players. Too smart for his own good as one coach said. And it showed in how bad his defenses were with us over his three years. Second biggest flaw was his lack of experience in the NFL led to less connections to build a proper staff initially, which led to the Lombardi hiring in 2021. NYJets4716
The reactions and hype reminds me of when the Chargers hired Brandon Staley.

I'm just going off what I saw in press conference. Maybe meek isn't a great descriptor, but he definitely seemed bland to me.

wackywabbit
Honestly, I totally hate this.. but I think this is a great hire in a great landing spot (roster/org, etc). Smart not to think Brandon Staley outcome is the end-all forbearer. Congrats Seahawks fans!
Trentwannabe
Adding Leslie Frazier as AHC is a great move for both sides. Thats a trusted voice for a young MacDonald to lean on.

I rag on Staley a lot, but I wouldn't be shocked if he is really good his 2nd go around (if he gets another HC shot) if he cleans those two areas up. Do what ever you can to help a young HC out. Edited February 3 by game3525

Staley was considered an up-and-comer, but many felt that he was a bit too green at the time. I don't think Macdonald has the same concerns really. Doesn't mean he'll work out, but I don't view them as having much in common minus being considered sharp defensive-minded coaches.
