2024 NFL Draft: Day 1 Discussion

Recommended Posts

here's a topic to start us off today, borrowed from our NFL Gen forum...

of the six QB's drafted in Round 1, which are in the best and worst situations for their development and success?

CHI- Williams
WASH - Daniels
NE - Maye
ATL - Penix
MINN - McCarthy
DEN - Nix

i'll say...

1) McCarthy actually, as he won't be expected to start and has great coaching and support behind him.
2) Williams, because he has the talent and has the receivers, but the pressure and expectations will be high.

3) Nix, because the others below him are in worse situations, and hopefully Payton will design to his strengths.

4) Daniels, because he has talent but does he have the right coaching around him?

5) Maye, because what's around him is so thin, and the whole infrastructure of the team is rebuilding.

6) Penix, because the question was who is in the best place to develop for their own career and he's not going to be. he needs reps on the field.

analyzing our 1st round Trades:

The Vikings make a modest move up to land J.J. McCarthy:

New York Jets send: 10th overall pick (QB JJ McCarthy), 2024 fourth round pick (129th overall), 2024 fifth round pick (157th overall)
Minnesota Vikings send: 11th overall pick (OT Olu Fashanu), 2024 sixth round pick (203rd overall)

The Vikings got the quarterback with whom they’d been linked throughout the pre-draft process and didn’t have to trade any Day 1 or Day 2 picks in order to do so. McCarthy is a gamble, but he’s a modest one whose risk-averse game should at least make the Minnesota offense viable in 2024. Having Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson around should help considerably.

The Jets got a little extra Day 3 flair to slide back one spot and take the player they would have taken at No. 10 anyway. Fashanu is a monster and could be the best blocker in the 2024 class. Everyone wins.

Jets grade: A-
Vikings grade: B+

The Vikings strike again, get an edge rusher who means they may not blitz 50 percent of the time in 2024:

Jacksonville Jaguars send: 17th overall pick (EDGE Dallas Turner)
Minnesota Vikings send: 23rd overall pick (WR Brian Thomas Jr.), 2024 fifth round pick (167th overall), 2025 third round pick, 2025 fifth round pick

Pundits across the board expected Turner to be selected in the first 10 picks, notably by an Atlanta Falcons team with a definitive need at edge rusher. But Atlanta went with Michael Penix Jr. (… huh) and Turner slid out of the first half of the first round. That made him irresistable to the Vikings, whose blitz-heavy defense spammed extra rushers and forced an overtaxed secondary into entirely too much single coverage situations.

Turner has the chops to fix that, generating pressure from four- or five-man sets. While Minnesota gave up extra value in the deal, it’s not something the team will feel this spring, The Vikings are intent on building a competitive team around J.J. McCarthy, and Turner’s arrival will help them win games even when the offense sputters.

The Jaguars felt they were in good shape to trade back and still be able to address a major need. Without any cornerbacks selected through 17 picks and a lull in the wide receiver market, it was a sensible call. Thomas lingered to 23 and gives Jacksonville a potential WR1 to top a useful, if unspectacular, depth chart.

The question is whether the Jags maximized their value here. There’s nothing wrong with taking a shotgun approach to the draft — it’s what the Patriots did so well for a while there — but the real impact of this deal won’t be felt until next spring.

Jaguars grade: B+
Vikings grade: B

I think McCarthy gets the edge over Williams because of coaching

The Falcons’ shocking first round of the 2024 NFL draft could have been even more shocking.

Not only did Atlanta do the completely unexpected and draft quarterback Michael Penix with the eighth overall pick, but the Falcons also tried to make a trade to get another Top 10 pick.

In a video from inside their draft room that the Jets posted online, General Manager Joe Douglas is seen on the phone and then telling others in the draft room that the Falcons were going to make their own pick, No. 8 overall, and that the Falcons were also interested in trading for the Jets’ first-round pick, No. 10 overall.

“They are definitely picking,” Douglas said of the Falcons. “And they want to come back up. So they want 8 and 10.”

The Falcons drafted the consensus board’s 34th ranked player at 8, then they drafted the board’s 68th ranked player at 35.

So, clearly, the Falcons were targeting Edgerrin Cooper at 10.

What's the over under on when he gets fired?

When Raheem Morris gets fired in 3 years would be my guess.  Although considering Arthur Blank is 81 yrs old, he may not want to wait that long.

If the Falcons miss the playoffs this year, I think they need another regime change.

They were in prime position to run their division and at least have a chance to take on the top teams in the NFC and they completely blew it.

The first round began with 14 such selections, including Latham going No. 7 overall to the Tennessee Titans. In the meantime, the Seahawks were discussing trade-back scenarios with the Pittsburgh Steelers (who picked 20th), Philadelphia Eagles (22nd), Minnesota Vikings (23rd), Green Bay Packers (25th) and Atlanta Falcons (43rd), according to sources.

ESPN's Matt Miller recently posted his top 100 favorite picks but noted the list wasn't based on pure talent. Rather, he took into consideration "value, scheme fit, how the selection addressed a need, what the prospect brings on the field and whether additional assets were gained and lost in draft-day trades to acquire him." Both the Vikings first-round picks ended up on Miller's list, and both were in the top 20.

Outside linebacker Dallas Turner, whom Minnesota traded up from 23 to 17 to snag, was ranked No. 9 overall. Miller wrote:

"I didn't love the value of the trade to go get Turner, which is the only reason this pick isn't even higher on this list. Focusing more on the player and the team fit, he'll have an opportunity to be a big-time impact right out of the gate opposite Jonathan Greenard. Turner had 10 sacks last season and has great speed getting after the passer."

The Vikings also traded up to get Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, though they only had to move one spot (from 11 to 10) to get him. McCarthy's selection was ranked 19th on Miller's list.

"When looking at the value of this pick, yes, the Vikings slightly reached. But when adding the context that they didn't panic and trade up into the top five picks for McCarthy, this grades out much better. McCarthy is pro-ready coming out of Jim Harbaugh's system and enters an offense with a ready-made infrastructure for a young passer. The offense has great skill players, a talented offensive line and a savvy play caller. The scheme fit is ideal."

The Patriots had two known suitors for the third overall pick in the draft: the Giants and Vikings. The Commanders had one for the second overall pick.

“I think you’d be surprised, really, in terms of the offers,” G.M. Adam Peters said Thursday on BIG 100.3 in Washington, via Bryan Manning of USA Today. “We got, really one solid offer and didn’t even move the needle. It would have taken — it had to move mountains to get us off Jayden.”

No specifics were identified, as to the team or the offer. The Raiders were believed to be interested in making the move to No. 2, and the Vikings were generally interested in moving up.

Via John Keim of ESPN.com, J.J. McCarthy was the second choice behind Daniels. If they had traded down with the Vikings, the Commanders still would have had a shot at McCarthy. If they had traded down with the Raiders, they would have had to trade up to snag McCarthy.
