Special Teams: 3

K: *Anders Carlson/Greg Joseph (*camp battle)

P: Daniel Whelan

LS: *Matt Orzech/Peter Bowden (*camp battle)

Notable PS players: Tyler Davis, Emanuel Wilson, Grant DuBose, Caleb Jones, Luke Tenuta, Jonathan Ford, Corey Ballentine, Benny Sapp

Notes:

  • All 11 draft picks make the initial 53.
  • Tyler Davis makes the 53 if Enagbare starts the season on PUP.
  • Kalen King makes the 53, beating out Corey Ballentine in a heated camp battle.
  • Jacob Monk pushes Josh Myers for the starting center spot. Ultimately Packers opt for experience. Otherwise, Myers is a prime trade candidate for me.
  • Andre Dillard plays well enough to edge out Caleb Jones and Luke Tenuta for a backup tackle spot.
  • Donovan Jennings becomes the latest Packers UDFA to make the initial 53 man roster.

Gonna be tough as hell for UDFAs to make this roster.

Yeah, this roster is pretty stacked at this point. We can all point to a player here or there we'd like to upgrade, but this is going to be a very solid 53.

I'm guessing you didn't intentionally leave TJ Slaton off the roster.

Not intentionally, no.  I'll update it.  Figured I was missing someone, I just couldn't figure out who.

My first guess:

QB: Jordan Love / Sean Clifford / Michael Pratt [3/3]
RB: Josh Jacobs / AJ Dillon / Marshawn Lloyd [3/6]
WR: Christian Watson / Romeo Doubs / Jayden Reed / Dontayvion Wicks / Bo Melton / Grant Dubose [6/12]
TE: Luke Musgrave / Tucker Kraft / Tyler Davis / Ben Sims [4/16]
OL: Rasheed Walker / Elgton Jenkins / Josh Myers / Sean Rhyan / Zach Tom / Jordan Morgan / Jacob Monk / Donovan Jennings / Caleb Jones / Luke Tenuta [10/26]

DT: Kenny Clark / Devonte Wyatt / TJ Slaton / Karl Brooks / Colby Wooden / [5/31]
EDGE: Rashan Gary / Preston Smith / Lukas Van Ness [3/34]
LB: Quay Walker / Edgerrin Cooper / Ty'Ron Hopper / Isaiah McDuffie / Eric Wilson [5/39]
CB: Jaire Alexander / Carrington Valentine / Keisean Nixon / Corey Ballentine / Eric Stokes / Kalen King [6/45]
S: Xavier McKinney / Javon Bullard / Evan Williams / Kitan Oladapo / Anthony Johnson Jr. [5/50]

ST: Anders Carlson / Daniel Whelan / Peter Bowden [3/53]

PUP: Kingsley Enagbare

Notes:

3 Edge is low, but with Enagbare on the pup, wonky PS rules with gameday call-ups, and the ability for Brooks or Wooden to slide to edge mitigated the need for more than 3 after cut downs.

10 OL is a lot, but in this case we use some of roster spots 46-53 to stash some tackle prospects that are getting ready to bloom. Tenuta and C Jones play so well in the preseason that we let Andre Dillard go, and Jennings' exciting upside as a swing tackle/guard helps him squarely beat out Royce Newman and Trente Jones for the 4th IOL spot. T Jones will make the PS, however, joined by Kadeem Telfort and Travis Glover.

I see the space on the team and the potential long-term reward of rostering three QBs.

It was tough picking the final roster spot. In this case, I predicted that Kalen King puts together a strong preseason, and with an overall lack of depth at CB we feel compelled to protect him. He beats out special teamers who make the practice squad, such as Zayne Anderson or Kristian Welch, who will be regular call-ups on game-day.

I don't know if we keep more than 5 WR, and I'm not expecting to carry 3 QB

With the new kickoff rules WR/DB bodies aren't as valuable anymore and LB/TE bodies are a little more valuable than years past.

That said, do I think 6 WR have the talent to make this team? We have 8 guys with the potential to fight for a spot.

I have been saying that DuBose, Heath, Melton, and Toure are all rosterable players.  And you also have McGough and Pitts with some tryout guys who are more or less sight unseen.  They are fighting for one or two spots.  I think that a lot of teams are pretty satisfied with WRs 4-7 on their depth charts, so we probably can get most of these guys back to the PS, if we want.  But it will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

I also think that with the practice squad rules over the past couple of years, teams don't need to hold a roster spot for marginal special teamers. At least, I consider that when balancing whether we keep a 3rd QB, 6th WR, or in my case, 5th OT.

I have a few things I'd do differently.

WR - How replaces Heath's special teams' assignments?

No Newman! Well done!

10 offensive linemen - not so thrilled since 2 have proven to be JAGS and redundant with Jones and Tenuta.

3 QB - easy no for me. If we want to go with three, get a vet back up who can actually win you a couple of game. Otherwise, cut Clifford and hope he clears waivers.

3 EDGE - hell no. Wooden has beefed up to 290 so he's better against the run inside. If he or Brooks are playing EDGE, you are foregoing a pass rush from that spot. Rather have Cox, assuming he's making a second-year jump.

BUT, what the **** do I know!

The biggest question mark to sort out is on the offensive line. Unless one of the day three or UDFA rookies stakes a legitimate claim to being lineman #7 it seems likely that Newman or Dillard sticks. Monk is close to a lock given his draft status and that they traded up for him. That would leave one or two spots for one draft pick, two promising UDFA and three other returnees on developmental tracks.

Everything else at present at least seems to be two for one or two spots (QB, RB, TE), two for definitely one spot (K, LS), three for one spot (WR) or a question of which position group gets an extra one (King vs. Cox vs. Welch)
