if he said he didnt need an extension when traded and then decided against that, its a bad look for him and makes him incredibly tough to want to trade for id assume

If he didn't need an extension then why isn't he still a Philadelphia Eagle?

I mean what even happens if they did trade him? Their trade with Philly was a 2026 3rd that can become a 2nd if Reddick plays a certain % of snaps or reaches 10 sacks. Would they have to give up a 2nd to Philly if Reddick hits those milestones for another team? That would be hilarious

lol... I don't think so.   Jets lost 3rd round pick and thats it.

its the expected response from any team in this situation though

I kind of expected them to say "We're working with him, etc. etc. we want him to be here for a long time etc. etc." but this just sounds like "You will report and you will play for us even if you don't like it. Tough stuff, kid."

I mean this is kind of a breath of fresh air. You cant just show up and call the shots.

So what is preventing the Jets from extending him anyways, assuming they were going to do that regardless? Or were they really playing with the idea they could trade for him, hope he has a bad season, then lowball him aftewards?

Don't get me wrong, neither side's strategy here makes sense and overall I find this situation hilarious.

They could have looked at him as a 1-year rental as opposed to trading for him and hoping he might have a bad year so they could re-sign him for less. Traded a 3rd/2nd rounder, but would get back a 3rd/4th rounder as a compensatory pick if he walks this off-season.

Depends on the exact verbiage of the trade. Likely he has to be on the roster or the 75% of the snaps has to be with the jets.

In theory, it's possible that they forgot to put that kind of caveat on the trade and it's not included in the fine print, but that would be a big miss I wouldn't expect them to have made

If the reporting is to be believed, the Jets are actually handling this well. Yeah, it’s “lol jets” territory, but it sounds like Reddick is the one who is backing off from his word. Sacking up and acting like a FO should be a breath of fresh air for a team that’s been dog walked by Rodgers the last two offseasons.

Explains why Reddick’s never settled anywhere despite being one of the most productive pass rushers in the league.

The Jets were/are looking to use him as a one year rental and were apparently going to “negotiate” his salary for 2024 once he reports.

It was a stupid plan

They gave him a extension offer when they were negotiating the trade. He declined. They still went through with the trade with the understanding that he would play this year, they would guarantee his contract and maybe a bump up for the year and negotiate a contract extension.

Reddick's opening presser with the Jets said himself that he would give the Jets his all no matter what and was not worried about the contract that things would be settled with his agent and Douglas.

Reddick never showed up to the Jets facility since. The Jets stance has been clear with him they will not negotiate with a player who refuses to ever be in the building.

The Jets are saying they will not trade him. They will let him sit out the season, rack up the fines and then retain his rights after the season.  If he shows up the Jets would talk contract with him but aren't going to talk contract with a guy who has shown no commitment to the team. Meanwhile they have multiple players who are in the building bleeding for the organization and are up for contracts like DJ Reed, Michael Carter...

Think both parties involved kinda shot themselves in the foot hear personally. If Reddick really wasn't going to on his current deal he shouldn't have told the Jets he would regardless of what leverage he thought he might have. Likewise the Jets gambling on Reddick actually playing on his current deal when he clearly was only motivated by getting a new one seems extremely optimistic.

Definitely think the lol Jets stuff is warranted here even if they were lied to.

All you have to do is listen to his original presser with the jets to see that he was saying something completely different than now. The Jets literally traded JFM to make room to give Reddick more money. A player who has given his all to the organization.

Reddick has skipped out on everything with this team and has not been seen since his presser and then expects them to bow down to him? Jets should refuse to trade him and just let him sit out for the year racking up fines. He'll be 31 after this season with the Jets retaining rights and will never recover that money.

The NFL has a very intricate business side of things. Reddick can say whatever he wants, if it’s not inked, it’s meaningless.

And the Jets can refuse to trade him, let him rack up fines. He can be 31 by the time the Jets "trade him" and he'll never make up the money he lost after sitting out a year.  Anyone who thinks this is smart is bad with numbers.
