You're welcome to look up the penalty data.

And it's not that easy if the playcalling and the play design are the reason for the issue.

Nope,  you brought up the theory … that's on you to look the data up to justify your thoughts.  Must be easier for some teams to do the OPI as it happens every single game in the NFL.

We were tied with three other teams for the 2nd most OPI penalties called against us with 6.

Very nicely done.  Again, is it players, scheming, coaching ... combo?  Whatever it is, it's got be done "better" as there are 27 other teams not having it called as much.

If your blocking scheme calls for an illegal cut block as part of the play, and your HC thinks that he'll get more yards out of the cut blocks than he'll lose from penalties, is it the fault of the Center that he occasionally gets called for clipping?

In other news...the "don't pay RB's elite money" is proving correct, if the Falcons do in fact cut ties with Freeman.

Top 5 paid RB's...

Zeke at average salary of $15M.

Gurley at $14.375M

Bell at $13.125M

Freeman at $8.25M

Johnson at $13M.

Rumors of Gurley, Freeman and Johnson getting cut or reduced.  Rumors of Gase not liking Bell's contract.

Which means....next top 5 average salary.

Barkley, $7.798M (rookie deal)

McKinnon, $7.5M.

Fournette, $6.787M.

Miller, $6.5M.

Lewis, $4.95M.

How's Jones' value looking now?  Seems like an $7-8M/average is in play, somewhat.  I'm not sure that I wouldn't pay that for 3-4 years for Jones.

What the heck does this have to do with OPI?  That's what I'm talking about ... quit moving the goal post.

WR screens, if you get called for OPI blocking for a screen once but twice it works, is the play worth it? The difference between OPI and not on that play can be the ball coming out a half second earlier. The "picking" WR isn't going to know the difference. So even though the player was called for OPI it was the play designs fault more than anything.

I'm looking more at down field plays/crossing routes, etc.  If it's a wide receiver screen .. you are correct.  I'm more concerned about the previous more than a screen.

The OPI number would go down a lot if we didn't call 4 plays a game where we ask one of our receivers to commit OPI as part of the play design.

If we are being called less than once every two games on average, then it is hard to imagine it goes down "a lot" no matter what.

Based on the post, league average is 3.  Are we really going to change the system to stop 4 penalties per year?

Or better yet, how about a wr coach teaching the finer points of running that play without getting called/caught.  There's a boat load of teams doing just that while running their route running.
