The NFL continues to vet other technological advances, including a replay system with high-res cameras along the goal line, sideline and end line; and a Skeletrack System tracking the ball, players and officials.

Wearable smart watches with haptics to support officials also have been vetted and could be utilized as soon as 2024.

Short term deal defined:

NFL Rumors -  BREAKING: The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing S Kevin Byard.
The move will save $13M in cap space. The Eagles traded a 5th, 6th, and S Terrell Edmunds for Byard in October.

The more hi-tech innovations/improvements they come up with, the more low-tech backups they should have on hand should something or other fail in a big moment.

Are these the rules Pelissero is talking about?

Quote

NFL special teams coordinators met Saturday at the combine.

If the kickoff team declares they’re attempting an onside kick, they potentially could be allowed to utilize an unbalanced (6x4) formation, raising odds of recovery. Just 5.2% were recovered in 2023 and there just two surprise onside kicks, thanks largely to run-ups being banned.

Other notes on their proposal …

Setup zone: The kick and return teams would line up on the receiving team’s 40- and 35-yard lines, respectively, and not leave until the ball is touched or reaches the “target zone” (20-yard line to goal line).

Touchbacks: If the ball is kicked into the end zone, the receiving team gets it at the 35. If the ball is kicked into the target zone and rolls into the end zone, the receiving team gets it at the 20.

That's basically how the XFL does kickoffs, right?  Line up the blockers and tacklers close to each other so people don't get a running start, and have only the kicker and returner allowed to move initially.

Damn if my WWXFLD bracelets aren't finally going to be worth something

JPAFootball -   Longtime ESPN award-winning journalist Chris Mortensen has unfortunately passed away this morning at the age of 72.

ESPN released a statement:

“Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and universally beloved as a supportive, hardworking teammate. He covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and passion, and was at the top of his field for decades. He will truly be missed by colleagues and fans, and our hearts and thoughts are with his loved ones.

XFL kickoff is great.  Both teams are lined up 5 yards apart at about the 30 (I believe).  The kicker is in normal position.  Nobody can move until the returner touches the ball.

They also eliminate the onside kick, instead a team can opt to go for 4th and 15 at their own 25 or 20 (can't remember which) after scoring.  Imagine if they had that in 2014.  Instead of hating Brandon Bostick, we would hate Damarious Randall and HaHa Clinton-Dix for not covering anyone and pointing at each other while Tyler Locket scored on 4th and 15.
