It's a function of schedule. Last year, the Falcons SB year, according to Sagarin the Patriots played the softest schedule in the NFL. That's despite making the Final 4 the year before.

So ... super easy schedule = great record = HFA = easy playoff games in Foxboro = Super Bowl.

This year, after winning the Super Bowl last year, the Patriots still managed to play the 27th weakest schedule.

So the last few years, the team hasn't been as good as its record. Probably an 11-5 team with 13 or 14 wins thanks to basket case schedule.

11-5 team?

They beat the Steelers, Saints, Falcons, Jaguars, Bills, and Titans.  That's six playoff teams.  They came within a strip sack of winning the SB.

Just cause they beat up on the Jets twice and Dolphins once doesn't mean they were an 11-5 team.

But they absolutely were top heavy and Brady carried them all year.  Hopefully next year is better.

Balance of close games will generally level out near .500 record wise.  Certainly so when playing other top level teams.

NE has won some they probably didn't "deserve" to win and lost some they probably "deserve" to lose

Thing is, Super Bowls don't have to be close. Lord knows there have been many dominant performances, just not by New England.

And it's not a function of a more recent era: Since 2000, in Super Bowls not involving the Patriots, the average MOV is a whopping 16 points.

The Patriots under Belichik just don't can't seem to do that.

Don't bother. He cried about the refs for 20 pages in the Jags post-game thread. Literally not worth replying to.

Neither Brees nor Rodgers have ever lost a game where they didn't punt, didn't throw an interception and averaged over 10 yards a play. I'm 99% sure of that.

Oh man you get the point. Tough to win when ur defense can’t stop anything... maybe not to the exact same level but : https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/201001100crd.htm

"They weren't that great, they only won their 5 Superbowls by quite narrow margins"

Early 2019 Vegas odds for Super Bowl favorites

NE:  9-2

PIT:  8-1

PHI:  6-1

MIN:  12-1

GB:  12-1

NO:  16-1

ATL:  18-1

Phily at 6-1 with Wentz is criminally low.

Strength of the conferences plays a role in that.  Wentz is also coming off a knee injury.

Last year and this year they went 14-2 and 13-3, but were nowhere near that good. Just played really soft schedules.  11-5 is about what we'd expect against a medium schedule.

Heck, how close were those Jags and Steelers games? And come on, you're not going to tell me the Titans and Bills were any good at all. They made the playoffs because someone had to.

Eh Brees lost to the Raiders in 2016 when his team punted twice, but still had 0 interceptions, 4 touchdowns,

"were nowhere near that good."

Yes they just went 2/2 in AFC Championships, won a Super Bowl, and almost repeated.  They were clearly a borderline playoff team that got lucky.
