IF Sherels goes elsewhere, CB and/or WR with return ability slides up the board.

Either could also protect against the possibility of Diggs or Waynes becoming a cap casualty.

Could add RB to that list as well. There is a need for RB3, return potential would be a plus.

I mean, he got the same info.

I’d bet money that McMullen just read Reidell’s tweet. That’s what he does. He’s one of those guys who “breaks news” shortly after someone else, but never sites the other person.

We need to rebuild some depth on this team.

Cousins canceled out Bradford, Richardson canceled out McKinnon. Compton changed nothing.

We just lost Tom Johnson and Jeremiah Sirles. We can probably sign 2 more free agents and still have 4 comp picks next year.

You may have forgotten about the fact the Jeremiah Sirles was not a compensatory free agent. Or perhaps you thought that he was. He was now. He was a restricted free agent. The Vikings not tendering him does not make him a compensatory free agent.

Also, Lamur's contract was not high enough to make him a qualifying loss. I still have not seen whether Shamar Stephen's contract will qualify him. If not, the Vikings cannot sign anyone else without it costing them a comp pick until they have another qualifying loss.

Please keep in mind, losing a compensatory 7th round pick is not the end of the world. I hope this does not cause the team to not sign a guy they otherwise would have signed. I am sure they are aware, but a player that is decent depth is more valuable than a future 7th round pick.

You dismiss the fact that Rick The Pickumulator doesn't currently have ten (10) draft picks for 2018 or 2019.  If he doesn't obtain 10 draft picks before a draft ends, The Apocalypse is Nigh.

That’s what I was thinking as well. There are a ton of good RBs in the draft this year and Latavius Murray is a free agent next year.  Adding a guy with return abilities like Rashaad Penny would be huge.

Whether we add a RB, WR, CB to the roster as a returner I want them to actually be able to play their position as well and not just be limited to playing only on special teams like Sherels was and to a lesser extent Patterson.  It almost seems like a wasted roster spot to me and I’d rather fill multiple roles with one player.

I agree with this to an extent but I also hate seeing one of the teams starters risking injury returning kickoffs or punts. Ideally, the returner is a solid backup at another position. For that matter, a long snapper that was a solid backup TE, LB, FB or something would be nice too.  Sherels played a little DB but never got to the point of being a solid backup. Patterson played a little WR but never got any better at that then Sherels was at DB. Going back further, Mewelde Moore was a solid backup running back and decent enough punt returner but it always seemed to me like he spent more time in the trainers room than on the field.

Do you remember when long snapping specialists were rare? FG accuracy went way up when teams started dedicating a specialist to kicking. Eventually kickers no longer played other positions but teams would have the same guy both punt and kick. The last team I remember having the same guy both kick and punt was the Falcons. Randall Cunningham wasn't a half bad punter. He had some nice punts in his NFL career.

The reality is that the league has tilted more and more towards specialists. I'll be happy if the Vikings can get a solid return man that can handle both punts and kickoffs rather than devoting a separate player to each.
