For the armchair GM's... the 'final' draft picks

So this draft there have been a lot of critics on the Raiders draft (again). Since we are all arm chair GM's i figured it might be a nice idea to make a topic where we make our 'final' picks if we were GM, and see in a year or so if the players we would have selected are getting more playtime and better stats/on field perfomance then the Raiders drafted by the Gruden-Reggie combo.

Some easy rules:

  • You have to pick at the same draft pick the Raiders actually picked, which means:
    •  no trading up or down
    •   you have to accept for example that we moved from 10 to 15 and traded up in the 3rd to #65
  • You can only select players that were available at the time of the pick, which means:
    • for example you cannot say 'i pick Roquan Smith at 15'
  • If you pick a player different from the original pick from the Raiders the Raiders player is also unavailable further in the draft. Which means:
    • for example if you do not pick OT Brandon Parker at #65 he is not available to be picked at #79
  • For clarity, i'm ok if you also want to re-use the #79 pick on drafting a player instead of trading it with the Steelers for Martavis Bryant.
  • You are not allowed to edit your post (otherwise you could update it during the season).

Compared to Gruden & Reggie we have the disadvantage of not being able to trade up or down. However we have the advantage that we know who will be available at the next pick and who isnt which is a huge bonus.

So here are all the picks that can be used, and who the Raiders selected with the pick.

Rnd 1 - #  15    Kolton Miller    OT UCLA
Rnd 2 - #  57    P.J. Hall    DT SMU
Rnd 3 - #  65    Brandon Parker    OT NC A&T
           - #  79   Martavis Bryant WR **** TRADE with Steelers ****
           - #  87    Arden Key    DE LSU
Rnd 4 - # 110    Nick Nelson    CB Wisconsin
Rnd 5 - # 140    Maurice Hurst    DT Michigan
Rnd 5 - # 173    Johnny Townsend P  Florida
Rnd 6 - # 216    Azeem Victor    LB Washington
Rnd 7 - # 228    Marcell Ateman    WR Oklahoma State

I'm curious to what your final picks would be. I will post my picks in a seperate post later.

Here's my take. I have bolded the picks that are different.

I actually like Kolton Miller a lot, but decided to go defense heavy and try to fix LB and CB early, while adressing DL/pass rush later on. Would have like to keep PJ Hall but feel he is a reach in the 2nd. If he was available at #65 i'd go for that but since he isn't went for Carter in the 3rd who some had in the 2nd but he has medical issues. I picked Oliver because CB is a need and he has the measurables.

I like what our FO did with Bryant, Key, Nelson and Hurst so didn't change them. All considered 1st or 2nd round talent availabel later due to issues.

Dont like the pick for a punter, but we need one. Kept Victor since maybe there is some upside to him coming back from injury last season and maybe his tape not showing his real potential due to that. Picked Norton because he is said to have the potential to be a rotational guy which would be good value in the 7th.

Rnd 1 - #  15   Tremaine Edmunds LB Virginia Tech
Rnd 2 - #  57   Isaiah Oliver CB Colorado
Rnd 3 - #  65    Lorenzo Carter   EDGE Georgia
           - #  79   Martavis Bryant WR **** TRADE with Steelers ****
           - #  87    Arden Key    DE LSU
Rnd 4 - # 110    Nick Nelson    CB Wisconsin
Rnd 5 - # 140    Maurice Hurst    DT Michigan
Rnd 5 - # 173    Johnny Townsend P  Florida
Rnd 6 - # 216    Azeem Victor    LB Washington
Rnd 7 - # 228    Kendrick Norton DL Miami

At the time...Not knowing who would go where...

Rnd 1 - #  15   S Derwin James
Rnd 2 - #  57   CB Isaiah Oliver
Rnd 3 - #  65    (Actually thought Hurst from here on out but was cool with...)
           - #  79   (If not Traded and had gotten the earlier picks, I'd went Tackle and probably Orlando Brown)
           - #  87    Arden Key    DE LSU (had we gotten S James but had we not the S Ronnie Harrison.)
Rnd 4 - # 110    CB Anthony Averett
Rnd 5 - # 140    Maurice Hurst    DT Michigan (SOOOO HAPPY when this pick was made. SOOO HAPPY!!!)
Rnd 5 - # 173
Rnd 6 - # 216    Azeem Victor    LB Washington (didn't see the pick but was happy as I wanted him to come out last year.)((Thought he'd be a 3rd last year)
Rnd 7 - # 228

Now my total 'hindsight' knowing where everybody was picked mock. Or my All AL team (size matters)LOL =P

Rnd 1 - #  15    LB Tremaine Edmunds
Rnd 2 - #  57    RB Derius Guise
Rnd 3 - #  65    DE Sam Hubbard
           - #  79   T Orlando Brown
           - #  87    S Ronnie Harrison
Rnd 4 - # 110    CB Anthony Averett
Rnd 5 - # 140    Maurice Hurst    DT Michigan
Rnd 5 - # 173    WR EQUANIMEOUS ST. BROWN
Rnd 6 - # 216    Azeem Victor    LB Washington
Rnd 7 - # 228    RB Bo Scarbrough

Al usually doesn't like LB's that high but Edmunds size makes him a lock.

Two RB's cause Scarbrough's size is the anti-smurf. LOL So much Bama late but so much talent on that team and yet they all played as a team.

just to be sure: that is what the raiders did. That is also what you would have done?

15 - Tremaine Edmunds MLB
57 - Brian O'neil or Brandon Parker LT
58 - Isaiah Oliver CB
79 - Orlando Brown or Tyrell Crosby RT
87 - Arden Key Edge
152 - Maurice Hurst DT
173 -Duke Ejiofor DE
185 - Equanimeous St. Brown WR
212 - Greg Senat OT
216 - Azeem Victor MLB

228 - Bo Scarbrough RB

I think Brandon Parker at 57 or 65 is a reach but we do need OT since I did not take Miller in the first.  Did not trade for Bryant who I am a fan of but this gave me the ammo to trade back into the 2nd.  Grabbed Equanimeous St. Brown who I believe is not as talented but could replicate Bryant's production in a couple years with out contract issues. Not a fan of Nelson so I worked my own trade back into the 2nd to grab Isaiah Oliver.  Overall I think this is a better draft with more value that still addresses our needs.

          -                EQUANIMEOUS ST. BROWN WR Notre Dame- I'm happy with Ateman pick, but I would have pulled the trigger on this kid
Rnd 6 - # 216    Azeem Victor    LB Washington

         -                 Holton Hill CB. Texas - probably would have drafted one more corner, unit has been so weak as of late
Rnd 7 - # 228    BO SCARBROUGH RB, Alabama

I wouldn't have traded up for Brandon Parker and kept the 5th and 6th round pick.... I could be wrong, but there didn't seem to be a rush of OT going off the board. Overall I wouldn't change much from the draftB|
