Kids learn, they listen to me, they hustle, and they support each other REALLY well. It is a fun environment, and I'm lucky to have a number of good athletes, and SUPER lucky to have so many parents that will work with their kids on their own time. This has resulted in absolutely dominating other teams in football and a really high win percentage in baseball, softball, and basketball. But I stepped back and happily went to assistant coach for my son's traveling team after finding out the guy who is HC was a Div I player and was an volunteer assistant at his alma mater and then an actual assistant coach for a few years at a smaller program. He only stopped because the time constraints were too much for him with a new family. Now that his kid is 8 he took up coaching and this guy is WAY better of a coach than I am. He has rotated players all over in practices and games until every kid is now at 2-3 positions that suit them, he has all of them competing against each other and still rooting for each other, and writes down notes constantly. Then he works with each player on something that he wants them to improve on (granted that is easier with 11 kids than it is 24, but still), not just his own kid. End result - today we won a tournament championship and over the 4 games had a +38 run differential. Kids beat every team handily, but still were good sports. Learned a lot from him and I'm pumped to get to take some of this to football where I'll be trying to do the same. we had a guy who was a PS player for the Cowboys (then later went and tore **** up in the CFL) come coach for a day for us. It was jaw dropping to see what an NFL "failure" could do. I think us coaches were just as jaw-dropped as the 7th 8th grade players. I probably learned more watching and listening to him coach than my 3 years coaching experience taught me. Good for you for taking a back seat, it's nice to hand the reigns over to someone else and see how other people do things. Especially for me, seeing how a guy who had been on professional rosters coached was a really cool experience. (The guy that took over for us for the day was a Box Safety/LB camp body for the Cowboys. He was a pretty unique guy and was considered the "Dennis Rodman" of the CFL. Don't rememember his name. Googling now to see if I can find it. )

Dome
what a turn of events this was on a sunday night. edit: this is surreal. I was just reminiscing about how cool of a guy he was, googled "dennis rodman of CFL" and found out he's a murderer. i literally was picking his brain about coaching last time i talked to him, now I see he hacked his wife up with a pocket knife. jesus. I think i need to keep drinking. Edited May 6, 2019 by Dome

Dome
First thing I did was email the head coach to see if he had heard. I remembered the HC didn’t like him, so I’m sure he’ll remember him. I didn’t get any bad vibes though. The HC was happy to have that day (really it was like 3 days) over with, he had asked the principal to just not have him help a All but she told him no way since he PLAYED FOR THE COWBOYS. He was definitely weird, but just seemed eccentric. This is actually jaw-dropping. Edited May 6, 2019 by Dome

I learned so much about the WR position just listening to the guy walk through the playbook.
FinneasGage
there's a pretty wild story about the town i grew up in having ridiculously high rates of cancer among the people that live/grew up there. there's a military base close by that's supposedly released a variety of chemicals in the air and water through some kind of foam or something. there's little support groups for people that graduated from the high school i went to that all have cancer now. like at least 20 girls now in their 30's all got diagnosed within a couple years of each other. it's a pretty small town. The codefendant in one of my active cases took a dremel to his friend's face after he stabbed him a bunch because the guy said his mom used to look like a girl in his porno mags. Luckily the public defender is stuck with him, and I've just got the person that helped him clean the knife and get away from the scene. Allegedly.
