Jaguars upgrade at Running Back, sign former All-Pro Jamaal Charles

The Jacksonville Jaguars, plagued by injuries at the running back position, have signed free agent Jamaal Charles to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday.

The move comes after No. 3 running back Corey Grant was placed on injured reserve with a Lisfranc injury in his left foot. Grant had been pressed into playing time with regular starter Leonard Fournette out indefinitely with a right hamstring injury and No. 2 back T.J. Yeldon playing with a nagging ankle injury.

In nine seasons with the Chiefs, in which he was selected for four Pro Bowls, Charles had scored 63 total touchdowns in 103 games. He had four 1,100-yard rushing seasons with the Chiefs as well as four seasons with at least 40 receptions.

He has a career average of 5.4 yards per carry.

Jaguars upgrade their backfield by signing a former All-Pro who has maintained a career average of 5.4 ypc. However, with how Blake Bortles has played recently, even a prime Barry Sanders probably wouldn't have made a difference in the last game. Going forward, are the Jaguars going to lean heavily on Charles to limit the impact of Bortles? How many carries can Charles sustain per game at this point?

Also, what does this mean for former #4 overall pick Leonard Fournette? Coming out of college there was nagging injury concerns surrounding him before the Jaguars took him in the top 5, but he wound up playing in only 13 of 16 regular season games, getting nicked up and missing time in several of those while racing out to a 3.9 ypc average on the season, and so far this year he's only played in 2 games, rushing for 71 yards and 3.6 ypc. Fournette is certainly talented, but talent doesn't mean much if you can't get on the field. Does this move with Charles signal that the Jaguars are ready to move on? Charles is a 4 time Pro Bowler and 2 time first team all pro, while Fournette has yet to achieve any meaningful awards after losing offensive rookie of the year to a 3rd round pick. How much time should Fournette get before he gets the injury bust label? Can he rebound and stay healthy for a potential playoff push?

Discuss.

1. This signals that Fournette's health is a real concern. Moreover, it signals that the idea that his hamstrings are made of LEGOs has truth to it.

2. TJ Yeldon is now a RB1 in fantasy.

Charles has more left in the tank than Orleans Darkwa?

They worked both of them out. So it looks like that's what they think, or at least he superior for the short term (not like either are long term guys).

I don't know how much it signals as a "real concern". Fournette was ruled out of Sunday's game. With Corey Grant going to IR and Brandon Wilds looking so bad that he was cut, they only had TJ Yeldon on the roster. Gotta make a move when you only have one player available. Oh, and Yeldon is playing with an ankle injury. So it's kinda important to actually have a RB available.

One of my all time favorites at RB. I thought he still showed signs of having some left in the tank last year with Denver, but they simply insisted on going with CJ Anderson/Booker throughout most of the year. Hope the Jaguars find a way to get Charles some touches.

But in all seriousness, he played pretty well for us for ~half a season in 2014 after being put into a starting role. Got injured towards the end of the year himself. We expected that he would be the RB2 in a running back by committee thing with T.J. Yeldon, but he never really got that many snaps. Just sorta slid down the depth chart and out of the league.

After week one when Mariota got hurt, I was reading an article that said the ulnar nerve injury that Denard suffered in college never went away and that he ultimately had to retire because of it. He did have a bit of a fumbling issue while with us, so that makes some sense and is maybe why the team never gave him a larger role.

This signals that Corey Grant is on the IR and all that is healthy right now is Yeldon and a PS guy...Even if Fournette was healthy we needed another body

While Leonard Fournette's durability is probably a concern going forward, in no way is signing a 30 year old Jamaal Charles an indication that the team is ready to cut bait with the 4th overall pick from last season that still rushed for over 1000 yards despite missing 3 games
