Offense:

There’s 3 key parts to our offensive system this week and they are:

1. Maintaining time of possession.
2. Minimising Khalil Mack’s impact
3. Taking advantage of the London CB situation

1. Given the presence of Mariota and a strong interior OL, even if they are weak at running back, there does exist the possibility that London could try and run the ball down our throats and keep the ball out of Brady and Zeke’s hand. So a large part of our strategy will be putting 6 blockers in on the offensive line to ensure that Mack’s impact is limited as he gets doubled, but that we can also push the ball forward against a defensive front 7 which outside of Mack isn’t particularly remarkable.

2. Continuing on from this and doubling Mack, a lot of quick passes out of the backfield will stretch a defensive front which isn’t the most agile. In particular, Powell and Sproles will get some plays out of the backfield. Additionally, while we’re aware of how destructive a player Mack is, if we can set up two OL near him, we’ll run the ball at him to tire him out. Behind Mack and Hughes is a bunch of part-timers and unproven rookies. Really, if we can limit Mack’s effectiveness rushing the passer, we’re Brady will have a free pocket to stand in for the majority of the game.

3. Thus if we can afford Brady a free pocket, he should be able to take advantage of a lacking CB crew for London. Haden is a shadow of what he used to be and after him is a couple of rookies. We respect Malcolm Butler’s skill, but with a trio of Thomas, Nelson and Baldwin starting, there’s 2 players that will create a mismatch if left in single coverage with anyone not named Butler. Additionally, as is consistent with limiting Mack’s damage as well as the effectiveness of Thomas & working to Brady’s strength, the short passing game will be the focus. Be it out of the backfield or slot, the objective is to consistently pick up yards and move the chains rather than go for the big play.

Defense:

Harrison lining up on Kelce and loading up pressure on Eric Fisher’s side are what our aims are in terms of wininng the battle at the LOS. Timmons will spy Mariota, Collins will work both in coverage or as a free rusher on passing downs while playing up to the LOS on running downs. We’re not too scared of the rushing threat from London despite a solid OL and Mariota’s presence because there isn’t a truly established RB in London’s committee. With that said, we aren’t selling out on the pass. Weddle will patrol deep and Nelson will see plays in place of Jones more frequently than expected to play deep while Weddle plays the intermediate range, simply because of the threat of London’s WRs on the speed front. Chris Harris Jr will take Brandin Cooks for the most part, while the match ups will alternate as necessary for the other receivers but ultimately should be quite favourable for us without double coverage being needed for any. As long as we aren’t beat deep by speedsters such as Cook, Brown and Nelson, we should be safe in being able to limit the London passing attack.

Offensive Gameplan

- Focus on the rushing game. We have a nice three headed monster with CJ Anderson doing the early down work. Then have Rob Kelley come in for short runs and power through with Montgomery to be the pass catcher. Also have Mariota do some designed runs as well. We want to wear down the Louisiana defense, control the game clock and take advantage of the thin Louisiana LB core.

- There is no doubt Louisiana has one of the best secondary’s in the league. However, the linebackers are definitely an area of concern for them. We will be looking for match ups in the passing game, specifically when we can get Delanie Walker or one of the slot receivers on a LB. Ty Montgomery will also see some plays motioning out wide which again should draw a favourable linebacker match up.

- In order to keep Louisiana honest and stop them crowding the LOS to stop the run, we will be taking some deep shots to our uber speedy receivers, including Cooks and Brown. Mariota has always been a good decision maker who is smart with the football so we don't anticipate many forced throws given our bevy of passing options at all levels of the offense.

- our o-line is going to have a tough day as they are well matched against the defense. However we have the talent to keep the pocket clean consistently enough to allow Mariota to operate, while Marcus also has the skill and speed to create where necessary. The right side of our line in particular will have success getting leverage in the run game and open some holes for our backs.

TLDR: run the ball, get after the LBs. deep shots to Cooks to keep back D.

Defensive Gameplan

- Get in the backfield. The Lousiana tackles are sub par and won't be able to keep Mack and Hughes at bay. Giving the tackles help via chipping etc will delay our pass rushers but will also take options away in the passing game for Brady. The oline is a lot more stout on the interior. Our defensive lineman will primarily focus on using their bulk to fill running lanes and make life difficult for Elliott. We do have Nkemdiche though who can come in as a pass rusher and can cause chaos with his unique size, speed and strength.

- The Earl is back in his manor. The value of Earl Thomas' range was on full display last year with how much he was missed when injured. Earl is now back and brings with him elite cover on the back end of the defense. In this game, we will be keeping him over the top of Jordy Nelson. Lousiana  has several pass catching threats but we feel Nelson is the biggest danger. Our corners will be playing sides and the young rookies will get a chance at times to prove they belong at this level. We are going to stop him stretching the field which should force Brady to sink and dunk. While this can be dangerous, the game against KC makes you wonder if Brady's age is finally catching up with him.

- Elliott is a threat in the run game, though it will be interesting to see how much Louisiana use him given his little use in preseason and off field distraction, being in court. Though our focus remains on bringing him down, we will be looking to strip the ball from Elliott where possible. The lack of practice time may have removed a little of Elliott's focus on the fundamentals and could result in a turnover or two.

TLDR: Get after weak OTs and live in backfield. Take away Jordy. Force short gains.

Both Offenses are trying to control the ball, but Louisiana has the Offensive talent to do so much more effectively than London. The issue for London is that if Louisiana gets behind, Elliott can always hit a homerun run, and multiple WR's can make the big play as well. If London gets behind, they are sunk. Their concentration on causing fumbles is more likely to cause missed tackles. I don't see the creativity in the gameplan to overcome the talent gap. Louisiana wins.

Love this matchup, maybe the best of the week. Louisiana looks strong but one of their issues is at tackle and Zach Ertz blocking skills aren't good enough to neutralize Mack effect. I think there's was a typo in Lukic lineup but that's his issue. On the other hand, if Fisher can play as well as he did Thursday, London could have one of the best OL in the NFL. That helps here against a strong but not intimating DL. In most cases, I'd go with the superior line play, but here, I think Lukic was right to attack London corners and with Earl limited to Nelson part of the field, I think it opens ups things for Doug Baldwin and Michael Thomas. Brady squeezes this one on the road with a good rushing effort from Zeke: 23-20

This is a great matchup on paper. I really like some of London's offensive matchups. Timmons spying on Mariota and Harris Jr. Vs Cooks could reap strong results. However, London's defense still has to play Louisianas offense and that team on paper is ridiculous. Even with a strong performance from Mack and Thomas patrolling deep, Louisiana is a little too strong this week.

Louisiana 34-29
