Here are the state champions for each level of college football in California (based solely on play against in-conference in-state schools):

Pac-12: USC

MWC: San Diego State

Big Sky: Sacramento State

SCIAC: Chapman (SCIAC is entirely in CA)

The GNAC no longer has two California-based football teams, as Humboldt State discontinued the sport. Last champion was Azusa Pacific in 2018, who beat HSU both times they played them.

Hawaii is the first FBS team to play 15 games without playing in the CFP title game since their opponents tonight, BYU, did so 23 years ago.

In 1996, in addition to the regular 11 games allowed then, BYU played in 3 exempted regular season games - the Pigskin Classic against Texas A&M (back when these season-opening classics were allowed), a road game against Hawaii which under NCAA rules allowed them to play an extra home game to recoup travel costs, and the WAC Championship Game against Wyoming (the WAC and Big 12 joined the SEC in being allowed to stage this game in 1996, though the WAC would lose this right only 3 years later). They also played in the Cotton Bowl against Kansas State. That BYU team was easily the best mid-major team that year, yet they weren't invited to an Alliance bowl. I'd like to see them join the Big 12, the same conference KSU plays in.

By 2019, the NCAA increased the regular season to 12 games. Hawaii is allowed to play a 13th game, usually a home game, because of the costs of traveling to and from the mainland. Hawaii did so this year, and also played in the MWC title game, to have a total of 14 games played before bowl season. The Hawaii Bowl is their 15th game this year.

Theoretically, a team can play 16 games in a season, with the regular 12 games, an exempted game at Hawaii, a conference title game, a CFP semifinal, and the CFP title game. This scenario has yet to play out. Hawaii has home games scheduled against UCLA next year, Vanderbilt in 2022, and Arizona in 2025. None of these schools are planning to take advantage of the Hawaii exemption, at least not yet - they can all add a 13th game if they so choose, but even if they do, all three face long roads to the CFP. Neither of the three were bowl-eligible this year, but things could get better for these teams in the future.

Unfortunately, no.

My Christmas gifts were all bottles of liquor. At this rate I'm going to need another Christmas to come around in a few weeks to resupply after this debacle.
