@Rolni   Did Todd Downing lose the sheet with all the packages that Bill Musgrave ran ?. BM wasn't perfect by any means but I thought he got a bum rap

I'll agree with this. Musgrave got a bad wrap. No OC is perfect. But Musgrave a capable veteran coach who could counter defenses with a good play call.

TD is overthinking things. There is no mis-direction in the run game. We've not seen any attempts really to get the ball to Amari on a screen for example where he's hard to bring down in the open field.

Then I see some major issues in personnel. Olawale is a young Reece and can exploit matchups. Good blocker, pass catcher and short yardage runner. He's getting limited snaps. Richard is a threat to bust one every time he touches the ball. He's getting limited touches. Washington as well for that matter. 2 TE sets. Holton can take the top off a defense as we saw. He's not being used in that roll.

TD seems content to force the single back runs. And is looking for quick passes in the pass game. Not a lot of creativity or adjustment. Which is the main issue. He's almost sticking to a game plan despite the defense shutting it down and not adjusting to what the defense is showing.

He's young. He will get better as the season goes on. But I will say this. He and Carr are close. That can be a bad thing. Musgrave was more ridged. He called the play and wanted it ran. That freedom can be a detriment IMO sometimes.

I thought as well Morrow and James making some decent plays, I thought Lee made a few good plays too. I remember a couple of TFL from him.

Gotta say that all in all the D has played some pretty good football. Given the doom and gloom here in preseason with the expectation that our D would be historically bad, you've gotta give the players and the coaches some credit. They look like a reasonably functional unit so far.

Good points about personal usage BP!

Really interesting point with that freedom, relationship thing IMO

BP weren't you one of Musgraves biggest critics?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me like our O-line overall is playing much worse than last year. No where near the top of the league like they were. The first two games looked good, but these last two they've been pushed around, can't make holes, and are allowing too much pressure too early on. I don't know if I've seen any plays where Carr can just stand back and assess the field after the snap. I read a stat that said he 's getting rid of the ball faster than anyone else in the league this year. And I have to wonder if that's partly because he has too.

When he's getting snaps thrown at him before he's even set, he has to. I counted at least 4 against Washington alone.

Are we seriously pining for Musgrave in here?  I've seen it all.  Guy is a stiff.    <- while also true, @big_palooka has said that maaaany times;)

Oh he's a stiff for sure, don't get me wrong. I certainly don't miss him nor am I pining for him. My point was he was vet play caller who was capable at times of dialing up plays that countered defenses. TD is a rookie OC who's not dialed that in. He deserves time to grow.

While a rookie OC obviously deserves time to grow, but TD did pretty much nothing so far, which could give us hope, promise.

I'm not saying that he is done, cause it would be crazy after 4 games, but he has to show something...

The Titans game was a good one, but as far it seems that they have a pretty weak D.

The Jets game was closer then the score shows, we were not dominant for the most part, but again that Jets team is weaker then us.

Washington should have been a nice contested game, but we were shut down and we struggled big time against the Broncos too.

I get that Denver's D is one of (if not) the best in the league and that Washington's D is much stronger then it was last year, but still...

We struggled to run the ball, we struggled to get our playmakers involved, it it weren't for the Holton TD our O showing would be really pathetic...

The worst part is that he does this with an improved (on paper) unit...

Regardless of Downing's play calling... I really enjoyed watching him get fired up on Carr's long bomb to Holton.. that got me so pumped. B|

I have stayed away from the forum because football hasn't been important. I spent Sat-Mon in Vegas. Didn't lose anyone I know personally but heard the shots and saw the chaos afterward. I was one block away at the Excalibur. Crying people coming into the hotel with blood on their clothes, casinos and the strip on lockdown, the huge blood drive effort the city underwent. Just crazy and senseless...

Ok, enough of that.

I've been scanning the posts from when I was away, couldn't read them all but this sub really is predictable. I knew TD would come under fire. Maybe it's deserved and maybe not. It's just the knee jerk reaction that is all too familiar.
