As @MookieMonstah said the league has essentially become a league where 2-3 teams can win it and one that encourages young stars to leave small markets at the first possible opportunity.

Yep. Only reason we MIGHT see a smaller market win this year is because of devestating injuries all over the place.

The league has never had parity. It's always been about a few teams having a chance at winning. Though the recent trend of encouraging stars to leave small markets at the first sign of trouble is a huge step in the wrong direction.

Yes but small market teams could compete… Detroit, Cleveland, San Antonio and even Golden State to an extent. The league/media doesn’t want guys anywhere but NY/LA anymore it seems like.

I forgot who said it but they made a great point, in the past we had real rivalries in the NBA, guys hated each other and the thought of playing together wasn't something they were interested in. In the modern NBA most star players have been friends since childhood playing together on the AAU circuit, USA basketball, etc. so they're much more inclined to want to team up to chase rings.

I mean kind of. I agree that they are trying to funnel everyone to NY/LA now and it's problematic.

However, 15/20 Finals teams in the 60's were LA/Boston. That's not even counting Wilt.

The 70's are weird because of NBA/ABA thing but still had Kareem or LA in the first 5 Finals of the decade. Then multiple appearances from Boston/NY.

13/20 Finals Teams in the 80's were Boston/LA. Detroit 2, Houston 2, Philly 3. That's all 20.

The 90's were the Jordan show and Chicago is a big market.

Then post Jordan it's basically fallen into small dynasties.

The only reason small market teams competed in Cleveland, San Antonio, and Golden State is because they had top 15 players ever and things went their way. Cleveland landed arguably the GOAT player and he still left them twice and they only won one title. San Antonio landed the most loyal superstar of all time. The Warriors jumped from great to GOAT level because Curry was underpaid via past injuries and the cap exploded allowing them to get Durant. Plus Golden State isn't a small market anymore. Detroit is really the only team to do it without a superstar and they are remembered specifically as outliers in history for winning with deep, grind it out teams.
