Back to rumors….don’t see the Raiders winning this stare down contest.  Big reason Adams wanted to go to LV was to reunite with Carr.  Trying to induce him to help the team out when he’s done pretty team-friendly deals b4 seems really optimistic

His last extension...

Quote

The Oakland Raiders and quarterback, Derek Carr, have finalized a five-year contract extension worth $125 million, making Carr the highest paid player in NFL history, reports NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

The devil’s in the actual details:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/derek-carr-14445/

His guaranteed money was 40M at signing with another 30M for injury / vesting guarantees (team decides 1 year b4 to guarantee it).  It turned his deal into basically a year to year deal after 2 years.   Contrast that to Matt Stafford who signed the same year, got 50M at signing and another 40M in injury / vesting guarahtees for 90M total.  Even Rivers, who signed 2 years before Carr, got 25M at signing and 65M total.

A year later Cousins fully guaranteed $ certainly changed the landscape.  But  guaranteed $ is what matters.   Even at day 1 Carr’s contract was incredibly team friendly.   Asking Carr to go for a similar team-friendly deal after his loyalty right after chasing Adams, seems like a big ask.   I’d expect they have to concede more than Carr here (but I do expect they’ll do that & get an extension done).

On one hand, I probably would be too after a year + of these questions over and over and over.

On the other hand, they totally brought it on themselves.

Amazing to go from "We have two 2nd round picks on the table" to "on second thought we will keep him around".

The funny thing being that neither is like to be true lol

Yeah, the only answer the 49ers can give now is "we're happy to keep him as insurance" - otherwise they're stuck in a CLE-Baker scenario.  The key difference being once JimmyG can pass his physical, all his 24.2M 2022 salary comes off the books (whereas cutting him now adds 7.5M in injury gurantees).   If a team actually thinks the 49ers aren't OK with keeping him, they're not going to offer anything in a trade, and certainly not while his return date is TBD.

It's also why teams will look for the 49ers to release him once he can pass a physical.   Of course, until he's able to be cleared, if no one is offering anything of value, then the 49ers might as well keep him, the only deadline that matters to save the 24M+ is to release him before Week 1  (although realistically you probably want to release him once you're sure no good offers are coming in, and you're ready to make it official with Lance).

So yeah, the surgery really messed up the original plans.  If JimmyG could have started throwing and working out with a new team (like you see Wilson doing in DEN right now with his WR/TE group), he'd probably have already been dealt, even if it wasn't for a mint.   Now it's total limbo, but at least there's a path to saving 24M+ once he's healthy enough to get cleared.

Exactly.

Right now, everyone is just playing their part. SF has to say these things because the ultimate goal still has to be to trade him and just saying "yeah, we are going to wait for him to get healthy and then cut him" is not going to happen, even though pretty much everyone knows that is likely true.

I would expect them to keep him all the way through training camp if they have to. They are going to squeeze the orange dry in hoping that someone loses a starter or something.

It's gonna pretty lit if a QB gets hurt / suspended (other than Watson) in the News Forum and your name pops up in the replies.
