Hosmer has a 69 wRC+ since mid-May.  That's over 2.5 months of being absolutely horrific offensively.

Don't need him offensively. We need someone who can play first base because we didn't have a single person who could on our 40 man roster. Doesn't even have to be a gold glove. He just has to play first base.

3.  Hoyer overplayed his hand after last season's deadline and expected someone to cave at the end, but they didn't.

I'm going with scenario #3.  Unless Contreras is extended (unlikely), this is a fail by the Cubs' FO.
