Vikings select Ty Chandler, RB UNC at #169

I like the pick and the potential of Ty Chandler. Great burst and ability to make quick cuts while maintaining speed. Also able to break tackles and ability to run inside and find the hole. Even showed a little bit of ability to catch the ball as well. Probably has a lot to work on in terms of pass protection and might not be utilized early for that reason alone, but also depends on what KOC wants his RBs to do role wise.

I think he's a far more developed runner than Kene Nwangwu is, with only a touch less in terms of top end speed. Nwangwu is definitely the special teams returner, but I think Ty Chandler has a legit chance to be RB3 this year and likely RB2 in 2023 when the team is likely to let Mattison walk and possibly cut Cook for cap reasons.

Possibly still trade Mattison this off-season if you think Chandler and Kene can contribute substantially

This might be a real possibility if the Vikings have any belief that Kene Nwangwu can contribute beyond special teams. I think if they keep all 4 throughout the season it may mean that Nwangwu gets pushed solely into a return specialist role.

Mattison has been pretty good at times, especially when Cook has been hurt and I'm certainly not wanting to get rid of him, but I also know the team cant likely afford to pay him and Cook. Might be looking to seize an opportunity to recoup a draft pick later during training camp/preseason if another team has an early season ending injury at the position.

Will the team keep Kene and Mattison with Chandler now?

Or maybe 4 RB with no FB?

Mattison is in the last year of his contract, so this is potentially just in preparation for that.

So um, I know he's older but a couple of things

1. Transfer from Tenn, didn't carry the load at Tenn, but did at UNC. So only one year of pounding, not too much mileage on the body even though he's older. 85.9 PFF grade this past year at UNC

2. Weighed like 205lbs during draft season, but plays bigger then that. He doesn't go down on first contact. Saw numerous instances of him dragging defenders and bouncing off first hits and tackle attempts, love it.

3. Hands are excellent. He is a natural at catching the ball and turning up field for yards after the catch. He's going to make his living here in the NFL and that is what will keep him in the league. He is definitely a weapon in the passing game. Not many catches (only 14), but thats out of 17 targets. They should have incorporated that more into UNC's offense, I dunno why they didn't. He's a natural in the passing game.

4. Really patience runner. He lets his blocks develop and once his picks a hole or a lane, this mofo hits it like he's shot out of a cannon. It's all over his 2021 tape, it's insane. I went back and looked at his RAS, and yep, 1.46 10 yard split which is 99TH PERCENTILE. He can hit a homerun anywhere on the field and doesn't go down on first contact, sign me up.

So I get why he dropped to the 5th. He's older for a draft prospect, and he's not going to be a 300 touch guy in the NFL. That said, he is 3x the running back nwangwu is (he's just so raw), and he's way more explosive than Mattison. I figured the Vikings would draft a RB sometime this year due to 2023 looming. I can envision Chandler being the lightening in a combo backfield with a bigger back.

I encourage people here to watch some of his 2021 tape; it's really fun.

Ty Chandler has not seen the field on offense and was only used on special teams. However, in the preseason, he showed impressive talent when he rushed for 113 yards in only 15 carries. If the Vikings would want to rest their top guys in Week 18, Chandler could play a significant role. He could also have a role if a running back were to go down with an injury.

Chandler’s biggest strength is his speed. He ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. He is also a good asset in the passing game. In addition, Chandler showed that he can run with power and has the agility necessary to be an effective running back.

In the near future, the Vikings need to make more decisions that involve Chandler. Alexander Mattison, the backup running back, will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 season ends, as his rookie contract will expire. Star runner Dalvin Cook could be on his way out, especially with the new regime in town.
