I could get on board easily with those first 4 picks. I know nothing of the other prospects, but like the positions.

Brents has been getting some 1st round buzz. Excellent size.

Wilson has been getting some buzz on his route running (someone mentioned he was one of the better route runners in the draft). Really good size.

Saldiveri has been surprising in terms of athleticism, is versatile (OT/OG)

Ramirez has been performing really well in the workouts and getting a ton of buzz

Johnson is a versatile safety. Had dropped and provided good value. I feel like we could add several pieces to our DB room in this draft

Mafi offers really good size. Jonah Jackson is going to be looking for a big contract next year, so it doesn't hurt to have depth and options for next year

TRADES

Detroit trades #6 for #11, #41, #228 and 2024 R4 (Titans select Will Levis)

Detroit trades #11 to Pittsburgh for #17, #32 (Steelers select Christian Gonzalez)

  • #17 Calijah Kancey, DT, Pittsburgh - Penetrating interior IDL. Instantly upgrades our pass rush
  • #18 Darnell Wright, OT/OG, Tennessee - Can start at RG and slide over to RT in the future
  • #32 Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia - Blocks like a 6th OL while offering some athletic tools. Will produce more than in Georgia
  • #41 Jack Campbell, ILB, Iowa - Future stud in the middle for years
  • #48 Julius Brents, CB, Kansas State - Big body CB that doesn't have to start right away
  • #55 Michael Wilson, WR, Stanford - I see Mike Evans in the way Wilson plays and his body shape. High end possession guy that compliments ARSB and Jamo
  • #81 Chandler Zavala, OG, NC State - Jonah Jackson is up for a new contract next year. Gives Lions positional depth and options. Could start at RG if Wright gets moved out to RT
  • #152 Cory Trice, CB, Purdue - Highly athletic CB with opportunity to develop
  • #159 Anthony Johnson Jr, S, Iowa State - Versatile safety that can play close to the line and in the back end
  • #183 Evan Hull, RB, Northwestern - Big body, gap running specialist with a nice burst
  • #194 Clayton Tune, QB, Houston - Developmental QB
  • #228 Justin Shorter, WR, Florida - Big body guy with tools. Should produce more with an NFL QB under center as opposed to project guy AR15

Lions OL is already top 5 in the league and is arguably #1 with these additions including de facto OT Washington. Zavala adds depth while also giving the team future options when it comes to the Jonah contract negotiations. Lions can rely on this group to get RB production out of Montgomery, Swift and Hull as opposed to drafting a guy like Bijan. Fill out WR room with a big body WR that is explosive off of the line (Chris Simms #4 WR FWIW). Tune has some tools as a developmental QB. Shorter has some tools to outproduce himself and be better in the NFL than in college.

Kancey is plugged in at 3T next to McNeill and Aidan Hutchinson. He'll add interior pass rushing which should open up some lanes for AH. Campbell is a plug and play for years. He has the size and the coverage ability to be a 3 down player. I'm not concerned about his 40 time as he's shown to have high end agility scores. Brents and Trice have a lot of promise but aren't thrust into starting action. Johnson gets added into the DB room to add some depth. We have a lot of 1 year rentals.

Done on PFN Sim so not always most realistic (I’ve never been a fan) but what the heck.  Full disclosure on my trades I’m targeting players I love of value from doing a couple dry runs. In short I have a basic idea where a lot of guys will go and take advantage according to my board

Trade!!!!

Lions trade 6 to Chargers for 21, 54, 85 and a 2024 3rd. This was actually a slightly tougher decision for me than expected as I just love the idea of doubling down with Carter and Kancey. Short scorcher. Non the less knowing kind of players I could get I had to make the move. The Chargers take……Myles Murphy.

18- Devon Weatherspoon CB Illinois

Great value and a player I really like, I’m higher on Gonzalez but at this spot Weatherspoon is an easy choice even though there may be players higher on my board.

21- Nolan Smith RLB Georgia

One of my favorite players in the draft period. a top 10 player to me. The upside is absolutely elite and the concerns (just like my other favorite player in this draft) are way over blown. He’s shown elite bend, get off and edge rush and the numbers back it up. Never fully unleashed in Georgia scheme but all the traits are there. Much stronger at point of attack than many think. The way this guy knocks away hands or jumps inside blocks he’s set up are next level

TRADE!!!!

Lions send 48, 81 and 152 to Texans for 33.

33- Calijah Kancey DT Pitt

Elite get off , elite agility, bend and balance. Exceptional hand fighter keeping his motion free.  Holds up well at the point of attack and has continually shown ability to hold his own against doubles. Even when caught against doubles he often is still able to dictate the general direction the 3 of them are going by gaining leverage with his quick hands and feet.  Gets stalled at times like anyone but he doesn’t get pushed around to often.  Another guy I’d consider taking in the top 10.

54- Steve Avila OG TCU

Good player, good value, fits need.  I’ve watched a few games but am not really in position to make any definitive statements on but I did like what I saw

TRADE!!!!

Lions send 55 and a 7rd 2024 to Eagles for 62 and 2024 3rd. I mean ,  sure lol. Eagles take Clarke Philips.

62- Joe Tippman IOL Wisconsin

Didnt really plan on doubling down on IOL but this is another value pick. With Jackson’s future uncertain and Ragnow aging/ injuries getting these 2 guys on rookie contracts is a hit out the park.

85- Jonathan Mingo WR Ole Miss

Love this dude he just has insane upside and mite not be as raw as people think. Built like a tank and can run.  Definitely one of my most underrated players in this years draft.

159- Byron Young DE Tennessee

So yeah again value. I really like this kids get off and bend on the corner. Shows enough strength that developing a serviceable bill rush is definitely do able.

183- Colby Wooten DT Auburn

Solid player at this spot and another body inside we need. Thought about Karl Brooks was a tough call. Both have lots of meh moments for me but a good rotational player here.

194- Mohamed Ibrahim RB Minnesota

Best running back on left on the board and frankly one of a hand full of players left at this point I could honestly say I’ve watched multiple times.  I think he can be a good back but mite be a little overated in big 10 country

Additional assets acquired

2024 3rd round pick Eagles

2024 3rd round pick Chargers

  • Witherspoon: Hard to hate on this pick here. Big fan of him overall
  • Smith: Really good player. However, if we had questions about a scheme change with Will Anderson then we are 100% having to make a scheme change with Smith in the mix at his size. He'd also probably take time away from James Houston
  • Kancey: He won't be here unless he has a Laremy Tunsil kind of draft night.
  • Avila: Good player that is versatile. Good pick that can play all 3 IOL positions.
  • Tippmann: I get why you've made this selection. I feel like there's a better chance of Decker being moved or Jonah not being re-signed than Ragnow moving on. I'd rather a OT/OG than a OG/OC if we're double dipping on OL.
  • Mingo: I like the pick. Good size, good athleticism. Hard to fault.
  • Young: He won't be there when all is said and done but that's an exceptional value.
  • Wooten: I'd probably prefer Brooks here but I'd also rather another DB. Room is pretty light in 2024 and beyond outside of Sutton and Witherspoon.
  • Ibrahim: I liked him but his lack of workout numbers is concerning to me. He's probably not the prospect we hoped he would be after 2021 season
  • 2024 Draft Capital: I think we'd have like 4 3rd round picks next year? We'd probably try to get more value/diversified draft capital

I don’t think any scheme change is needed for Smith or Anderson. I think from listening to just about everyone dialed into the program over past few years it’s pretty clear they want a true rush linebacker. Someone always seems to be going out of there way to make sure everyone knows they have a a rush linebacker position even though they really don’t have a true one. They’ve tried Houston who really is more of a true rush end ( I’m a big fan of Houston by the way, I’ve gone back and watched nearly every snap and his college tape. That bend move is absolutely for real and not going anywhere, if he develops a secondary move off that watch out) and I think they may have had some hopes for Barnes and Julez there but none are that true all movable weapon they want for this defense.  Smith has that skill set and talent.

They've been playing Hutchinson at rush end and he had a DROY worthy year. We have James Houston who was on track to set records. I don't think we need a rush end but a high end closed end edge. A bigger bodied dude that can offer up some more pressure opportunities than what our current group (Cominsky, Okwara, Paschal, etc.) can provide. Rich Eisen asked Dan Campbell if he had any guys that he really liked (akin to DC's comments about Hutch last year) and he said "yes". There's also rumours of the Lions being linked to Tyree Wilson (who would be the perfect compliment in that role).

If you're taking Anderson or Smith then you're switching AH to closed end. He was less effective in this role and really opened things up once Cominsky was in the lineup.

Not necessarily, we are basically talking about a amoeba 5 man front and the rush linebacker can line up anywhere (doesn’t mean 5 guys are coming)  You know me though talent and my board will almost always win out.

Did a 5 rounder on PFN. Traded down from 6 to 8 and picked up pick 75.

8. Myles Murphy Edge Clemson

18. Devon Witherspoon CB Illinois

48. John Michael Schmitz OC Minnesota

55. Siaki Ika DT Baylor

75. A.T. Perry WR Wake Forest

82. Jaren Hall QB BYU

152. Roschon Johnson RB Texas

159. Mike Morris Edge Michigan

I'm know I'm higher on Murphy than most, but I see him really helping our DL especially combined with Siaki Ika being a space hog. I think this Dline will be better than the 2014 line, and I thought one was special. Now it doesn't have a force like Suh, but from top to bottom and the depth is better imo.

Schmitz gives us our RG this year or at least depth. He could also be a possible replacement for Jackson if we let him walk next year and this way we wouldn't be relying on a rookie to do it.

I was intentional on grabbing Hall. I like him as a prospect and if we are going to reach for a qb, this is the spot I want to do it. In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if Hall is taken higher than this, but this is where I wanted to look.

I didn't intentionally neglect LB, but it just happened to fall that way. I was going to target Campbell at 55 but was picked right after Schmitz. Although our OL is great now, I wanted to improve it and prepare for next year. I still believe the game is won in the trenches and I always want those lines stocked. I believe that is how we will make our dynasty if we can make a dynasty.

I haven't looked at the chart but that trade seems like poor value to me. If I'm trading back 15 spots in the first I'd like more, preferably a future 1st included.

Agree unfortunately this was the only offer I got. I probably wouldn’t do that deal in real life but having the advantage of knowing general adp on the sim I knew I could parlay that into 2 guys I have top 10 grades without even accounting for what I could do with 18.  Trade was more like a player swap than draft pick swap from my point of view
