The officials on the field, and the league officials are two separate entities. Vincent could be telling the truth that no one from the league offices authorized a 5 minute countdown to resume the game, and the officials following the rulebook on the field could've told the coaches they were on the countdown.

Then communication is absolutely the issue, because they were in fact, setting up the surrounding streets for people leaving, or at least clearing a path for the ambulance to get out unobstructed.

I saw someone on another forum suggest that if they need to play they should tell the NFL they will intentionally tie. Basically let the Bills walk in the ball, Cincy walks down the ball and takes a knee at the 5, kicks a FG, then both teams take a knee until the game is over.

I can't hate this idea and feel it might be the "right" thing to do

And there’s no easy two way communication. None of the refs on the TV angles were at the replay area talking with NY. They were on the field doing what they could. Outside of some Avengers style unlimited coms earpiece I don’t see how this could have been communicated based on no one going to the replay booth.

Call it a "no contest" instead of a tie. Done.

I know this is minimal of importance right now but imo that would leave a dark cloud over the entire 2023 AFC postseason. Which already might have depending on what happens with Hamlin 😔.

Ravens get robbed of a potential AFC north title + potential home playoff game, Bills lose the 1 seed and a bye week and homefield, everything goes thru KC now. Bengals can't move from the 3 seed to 2 seed.

Just an awful awful situation and best case scenario is we get an update this morning that he's stablized and no longer in critical condition 🙏

Not sure if it has been touched on yet, but I am very interested in how this changes the game moving forward. This was the NFLs biggest fear, especially if the worst does indeed happen. There has seemingly been a giant swell of parents pulling kids from football for the past decade because of injuries/safety and this tragic accident will almost certainly be used as example 1A in every board meeting in communities around the US moving forward.

Its hard not to think of the ripple effect and what changes this offseason could bring--especially at the Middle School/High School level.

You though parents were afraid of putting their kids into football then? Buddy watch out

Microsoft Teams, brought to you by the official tablet sponsor of the NFL

When the league overhauls their emergency policies based on this, that should be one of the first things they do. Passing the phone around like it's Goodfellas is dumb as hell.

There have been hundreds of thousands of players and millions of plays in between the last instance of this occurring. Nothing is going to change. Not sure what could change. This can happen in any sport it sounds like, outside of maybe basketball. There are inherent risks for everyone, this one in the NFL is so absurdly minimal that it's just a tragedy and not a policy changer.

It can definitely happen in any sport where there's physical contact. Heck, if it can happen in Soccer it can happen in just about any sport.

Yea and the refs should have gone to that to hear what the process was. I thing that should be a future change to have that countdown be indicated by the NY and not the standard “from the moment the ambulance leaves the field.”
