Side note, I also don’t love sending all three receivers flying down the field either. Almost two minutes left on the clock, all you needed was a first. Have a crosser or a comeback just past the marker so you have something other than a heave or a check down.

Shrug. That’s hindsight, though.

The call sucked as bad as the execution for sure. You have Justin Jefferson on your team and that is the play you draw up on 4th and 8? Gross. Let 18 carry you.

3 options going deep and Hockenson short.  I guess they liked that matchup and wanted to isolate Hock.  If it was an option route, going inside was probably the better one as you remove the sideline as a defender

I'm sure they liked the matchup. Hock was consistently burning us. Until it mattered most, thank the football gods.

That 4th down has somewhat saved KJ Osborne from the fallout he deserves for dropping the big third down pass.

Wouldn't call that a drop. Defender had his hand in between the ball and KJ's chest.

i thought that was a pretty good defensive play getting his hands on the ball/stripping down on the arms.  Was that pass a little behind Osborn?

Yeaaah, hard pass. Throwing short of the sticks (especially that short) on 4th down is a dumb idea about 99% of the time

Yes and no.  It is a very good idea when the defense is playing loose, such that the receiver can meander to a first down before contact.  It is a very poor idea when the receiver is wearing a defender like a cape, as was the case here.

depends on who the pass catcher is.  Tyreek Hill, JJ, Deebo, those players getting a pass short of the sticks and converting is a bit different

Well, the WRs are usually the ones forcing the defense back while the RB or TE works underneath.  The pass itself is high percentage, irrespective of target.

It's a matter of execution:  if there's a defender on the screen when the pass is caught it shouldn't have been thrown.

I’m certainly scarred from a year of a Matt Patricia led offense, but how often do you see players so wide open on 4th down that they can just waltz past the sticks? Especially on a 4th-and-medium/long. Maybe on 4th-and-short where you can cause some confusion at/behind the LOS.
