Re-sign DJ Chark and sign Derrick Nnadi and Holmes completed my offseason wish list.

  • RB Jamaal Williams -> David Montgomery
  • OL Evan Brown -> Graham Glasgow
  • CB Amani Oruwariye -> Cameron Sutton
  • CB Mike Hughes -> Emmanuel Moseley
  • S DeShon Elliott -> C.J. Gardner-Johnson

Plus we re-signed Cominsky, Buggs, Anzalone, Harris, Moore, Badgley, Daly, Wright, and Zylstra. Tell me where we got worse?

Lions sign CJ Gardner-Johnson to 1 yr deal!!

Holy hell!! Excited Season 5 GIF by The Office

I am not sure what to think about this signing.  He is a young and versatile player but we still have big holes at #3 DT and #2 QB.  Still, whatever CBs we take will not be forced in to a starting role unless we have major injuries.

Tracy Walker is coming back from injury and despite CJ Moore being a solid STer, he doesn't do much defensively. We needed safety depth next to Kerby. I love this move. We are not used to having depth.

One secondary effect of the signing of so many DBs:  Brad Holmes could be setting up a trade-back to build draft capital in 2024.

Brad Holmes is showing my team building philosophy in action. Fill holes in free agency, draft talent. I am beyond pumped. Let's re-sign Chark and let Holmes cook in the draft. Everything is on the table.

#3 DT? Dude we need an upgrade on our number 1 and number 2 DTs, lol. After the F/A signings we've made DT has moved above CB as possibly our biggest need. Wouldn't shock me at all to see the team take Carter at 6 (I hope they don't, I remember the last time the lions took a DT with character and work ethic questions in the first round... Didn't work out too well). Or Kancey at 18 if he's there (this one I wouldn't mind).

You also didn't mention TE which is a huge need (we don't have a starting caliber TE on this team) as well as G (Glasgow is a nice depth guy but he shouldn't be starting).

Again would not be shocked at all to see the Lions draft a TE or G high.

TE I hope no earlier than the 2nd... Not sold on Mayer, know nothing about Kincaid other than the hype and while I love Darnell I think 18 is a bit too high for him (I wouldn't be "angry" but I'd be a little bummed we couldn't nab him later).

G I could definitely see Torrence at 18 and would have no problem with it.

The draft has definitely become more interesting... Before free agency I was 100% sure a CB should be the pick at 6. Now I really don't know what I expect them to do.

Part of me is starting to think there might actually be something to all the talk of a QB at 6 by the pundits...I don't want it to happen but I guess I could live with it

... Unless it's Levis...I will be furious if they draft Levis. Stroud is the only QB I really "like" in this draft but I hate Levis as as 1st round pick... Young I could live with... Richardson I could live with but if Roger reads that card and it says Levis I'm breaking something.

Alim McNeil is a pretty good DT.  Isiah Buggs played really well also.  However, both of them played too many snaps because the only other DT we had was Benito Jones.  Neither of them provided a lot of pass-rush juice but that could partly be due to them playing too much.  Unfortunately, this draft class is kind of weak with respect to DTs.  I doubt the Lions would be interested in Jalen Carter at this point.  Bryan Bresee isn't injury prone but is still under-developed because he missed so much time.  I want to like Kancey but those short arms could be a problem.  Keeanu Benton is the cleanest DT prospect at this point.  I hope the Lions take him.

I don't see TE as "must-do" early in the draft.  Brock Wright has been solid.  James Mitchell played fairly well down the stretch once he got past his ACL and he hasn't hit his ceiling.  Shane Zylstra was re-signed also.  This is a deep draft for TEs.  It isn't a stretch to think that they could get a long-term solution in Round 3.

I agree with this.  Our TE production improved after Hock was traded.  Maybe we don't have one elite TE, but we have 3 really solid ones and I think Mitchell has the potential to be elite and he would have gone much higher in the draft if he wasn't coming off an injury.

DT is a need for sure still, and I think CB is too since most of our CBs are only signed for 1 year.  OG is a need as well depending on what happens with Big V but I would like to find a cheaper and more long term option than he or Glasgow.

I think our free agency has pretty much just allowed us to go BPA in this draft from the start.  I know that is typically the plan but holes on the team are easier to fill with early picks so need tends to creep into decisions.  But we really have plugged a bunch of our holes in free agency and added depth even.  So we will let the board fall to us and take the best player at 6 and 18 or potentially move down, which is still my primary desire if Anderson is gone at 6 which is highly likely.  I want to drop down as far as we have to to gain an extra 1st next year and just keep parlaying the Stafford trade into more assets to continually give us the ammo we need to go get a guy if we want someone bad enough or to keep plugging holes left by these one year deals.

I pretty much agree with most of this.

I want to like Kancey, I really do. I typically like pass rushing DT's and want the pressure up the middle. His short arms don't concern me...I remember that being the knock on Aaron Donald as well, and me not caring one iota about that because he was strong, quick and had a fantastic motor. The thing about Kancey I don't like is he is not strong. I think he is going to get eaten up by OLinemen in the NFL. I'm fine with a DT being short as long as he is strong, has a good motor, and has quickness. Kancey has 2 of the 3, but I think he's going to get buried by OL and at best be a specialist on passing downs. I don't think I want that type of player in the first. But man I want to like him.

I don't really like the DT class this year. I like Benton, I like Siaki Ika as a space hog; Jalen Carter in theory, but would stay away from him; I also want to like Mazi Smith, but his game isn't impressive. He should have all the tools but for some reason it doesn't seem to click. I'd look at him late 4th or 5th round if he is still there and wouldn't be heart broken if he was there and we passed on him.

TE I could care less about. I think we are fine there. In the third would I rather have a TE or any other position, I'm probably going with any other position. If someone drops, then fine. Don't skip the talent. But I don't think we have to be looking for one. We had a starter in Hockenson. We were better without him.
