I agree with this.  Our TE production improved after Hock was traded.  Maybe we don't have one elite TE, but we have 3 really solid ones and I think Mitchell has the potential to be elite and he would have gone much higher in the draft if he wasn't coming off an injury.

DT is a need for sure still, and I think CB is too since most of our CBs are only signed for 1 year.  OG is a need as well depending on what happens with Big V but I would like to find a cheaper and more long term option than he or Glasgow.

I think our free agency has pretty much just allowed us to go BPA in this draft from the start.  I know that is typically the plan but holes on the team are easier to fill with early picks so need tends to creep into decisions.  But we really have plugged a bunch of our holes in free agency and added depth even.  So we will let the board fall to us and take the best player at 6 and 18 or potentially move down, which is still my primary desire if Anderson is gone at 6 which is highly likely.  I want to drop down as far as we have to to gain an extra 1st next year and just keep parlaying the Stafford trade into more assets to continually give us the ammo we need to go get a guy if we want someone bad enough or to keep plugging holes left by these one year deals.

+1 for all of this.

I want to like Kancey, I really do. I typically like pass rushing DT's and want the pressure up the middle. His short arms don't concern me...I remember that being the knock on Aaron Donald as well, and me not caring one iota about that because he was strong, quick and had a fantastic motor. The thing about Kancey I don't like is he is not strong. I think he is going to get eaten up by OLinemen in the NFL. I'm fine with a DT being short as long as he is strong, has a good motor, and has quickness. Kancey has 2 of the 3, but I think he's going to get buried by OL and at best be a specialist on passing downs. I don't think I want that type of player in the first. But man I want to like him.

I don't really like the DT class this year. I like Benton, I like Siaki Ika as a space hog; Jalen Carter in theory, but would stay away from him; I also want to like Mazi Smith, but his game isn't impressive. He should have all the tools but for some reason it doesn't seem to click. I'd look at him late 4th or 5th round if he is still there and wouldn't be heart broken if he was there and we passed on him.

TE I could care less about. I think we are fine there. In the third would I rather have a TE or any other position, I'm probably going with any other position. If someone drops, then fine. Don't skip the talent. But I don't think we have to be looking for one. We had a starter in Hockenson. We were better without him.

I get you on Kancey and think he may fall a little bit.  If his combine was elite he would have been a top 10 pick but could drop to the late 1st to mid second.  I still am a big fan of Karl Brooks.  I wish he was a combine invite but I think he has the Bowling Green pro day today and has a planned top 30 visit with Detroit.

I've seen Brooks' name popping up in here, but know very little about him. If I find time, I may have to look into him a bit.

I think one of two things are at play for pick #6. Not necessarily what I want, but what I truly think the Lions have set themselves up for in FA.

My favorite choice, trade down and out at 6.

One of the last things I want, drafting a qb.

I think the draft for the Lions is going to come down to one of these two things. I've probably been more excited for this draft then I have in ages. We now have so much flexibility. I'm hoping the Lions are selling well they are going to take a qb at 6 to get some offers to us. I'd love to somehow get another 1st next year from some team desperate for a qb.

Kancey's arms are 2 inches shorter than Aaron Donald.

Alim McNeil is a pretty good DT.  Isiah Buggs played really well also.  However, both of them played too many snaps because the only other DT we had was Benito Jones.  Neither of them provided a lot of pass-rush juice but that could partly be due to them playing too much.  Unfortunately, this draft class is kind of weak with respect to DTs.  I doubt the Lions would be interested in Jalen Carter at this point.  Bryan Bresee isn't injury prone but is still under-developed because he missed so much time.  I want to like Kancey but those short arms could be a problem.  Keeanu Benton is the cleanest DT prospect at this point.  I hope the Lions take him.

I don't see TE as "must-do" early in the draft.  Brock Wright has been solid.  James Mitchell played fairly well down the stretch once he got past his ACL and he hasn't hit his ceiling.  Shane Zylstra was re-signed also.  This is a deep draft for TEs.  It isn't a stretch to think that they could get a long-term solution in Round 3.

I think if we're looking for a penetrator in the mid rounds Karl Brooks or Keion White would probably be the best options.

I do agree that DT is relatively weak this year... At least at the top of the draft but I still think they at least have to try to address it.

I suppose if they took Tyree Wilson he could kick inside on passing downs.

Lions sign CJ Gardner-Johnson to 1 yr deal!!

Holy hell!! Excited Season 5 GIF by The Office

I don't see how Jeff Okudah stays on the roster at this point.  This draft has a ton of CB talent.  Even if we only take one CB in this draft, Jeff Okudah will get pushed out.  I get the feeling he will be traded for a bag of footballs.

Did we re-structure Romeo Okwara's contract or did we re-negotiate.  I would prefer the re-negotiation.  Pushing stuff into future years can be problematic.

Word is Romeo took a $9 million pay cut to stay, like Harris took a paycut to stay.

They might do the same with Vaitai if they think he can play and the nerve problem in his back isn't as back as being reported.

I'm sure the Lions want to bring back Chark, and have capspace for moves that might become available.

Based on Over The Cap, he renegotiated and took a $9M pay cut.  He will count 5.6M to the cap this year and 3.5M next year but that was already in the deal from his signing bonus from the beginning.

Brad Holmes is just like any other GM in the NFL.  We are just not used to having a GM make smart moves and be decisive about making them.

Given we have never experienced it and plenty of teams are in cap hell while not being a contender, I would say Holmes is not like every other GM.  Many would try and restructure to push money forward or just cut them.  This taking a pay cut and staying on the team is new for us, and for many teams around the league.  I don't think this happens that often.

We pretty much just gave him a one year, 2.5M deal since the rest of his cap hit is from the pro-rated signing bonus.  Thats a shrewd move given I think he could have got more elsewhere, maybe not a lot more but more.  Plus it keeps veteran depth around and keeps the depth intact allowing us to be flexible in the draft.
