Watching Tim Jenkins’s breakdown just now, and there’s so much good from Russ/Payton from yesterday. The offence looked so competent for most of the afternoon, and it really drives home the idea that the Hackett hire destroyed the entire 2022 season. The butterfly effect of everything yadda yadda yadda, but if we could’ve had the offence we saw yesterday combined with the 2022 defence, we’d be cookin.

Last year’s offence didn’t even need to be good, it just needed to not be the worst offence in football. Man…

So, my point is I'll bet Russ left some big plays on the field.  Without the "All 22" it's just hard to tell. Sean always designs a lot of vertical into his routes and is very good at scheming them open. Hopefully Russ can start finding the right guy. Something to watch for in the future though.

As far as defense though I think reality is setting in. @Dbrog24 has been pointing out for awhile the drop off from Vic/Evero to VJ and it may be larger than he thought. Our defense has been playing well above their talent level since we hired Vic and we got the same or better last year. We've lost two great DC's and their supporting staffs. VJ isn't close to that level and it shows. I mean, they only punted once. Sheesh.

Oh well, by the end of the year this loss won't look so bad when we're looking at draft position. Seans got his work cut out for about the next 4-5 years. Personally I'm looking forward to it. I enjoyed the 60's even though we sucked. I'll enjoy this stretch too.

I thought the commentators were going way OTT with Crosby's impact, in particular the 3rd down play in the RZ when it was 13-10.

Russ just got happy feet, not wanting to have a turnover.

Here's the play I was talking about. Baldy saying the same thing, that Russ has to hang in there vs a 3 man rush. Not good enough.

Call me surprised....

I realize he was never going to pass Dulcich on the depth chart, but not having Albert O really hurts now.   I don't have a problem with the decision given they didn't want to have 2 non-blocking TE's, but man it's just tough having no real difference-makers at TE for our pass game.

We'll need Jeudy back, and probably more Perine to help beef up the pass game.    Going 12 formation is going to be rough watching the TE's we have lumber around.

WAS D was middle of the pack last year, but they were decimated by injuries.   Not sure you can glean much from last week, since they played the tanking Cards team (every coach and player doesn't tank, but the FO sure is).

Not sure if y'all follow Tim Jenkins and Kurt Warner but here are their two breakdowns of Wilson this game.

Tim Jenkins:

Kurt Warner:

My take away is Payton is a better play designer than Hackett (shocker) and Wilson is still struggling to read the defense and make on schedule plays. I'm hoping that improves as the year goes on given this is his 2nd new system in as many years and Payton is a much more capable of coaching than what we had last year.

Bonus: Todd Davis breaks down a couple plays as well (including the onside kick). I didn't care too much for the production of this given Todd is breaking down still images instead of being able to see plays play out but its still Broncos football so if you need more content it's entertaining enough. I do love these analysis type stuff though.

Todd Davis breaks down this play as well and puts some blame on the WR here. Love all the content people put out and how the same plays can be interpreted differently.

I think we have a case where both statements are correct - Payton is a great O mind, he's scheming up great plays that help Russell succeeed....but Russ still has significant limitations.   He's also still a lot more functional now than last year (duh - thanks Hackett).

The 2 biggest limitations Russ has:

1.  He still needs to see the guy break open.   It's why having Dulcich as TE and Jeudy as our X is so important.   They can create separation (Jeudy) or find open spot in zone (Dulcich) that their peers simply can't do.  But it's very much a result of Russ' limitations.

2.  He absolutely still thinks he can extend plays with his feet, and leaves the pocket at times where he needs to hang in there (and when he's out of the pocket, he's no guarantee he can make the magic happen with his feet).   Don't get me wrong, he has to scramble with the issues in pass pro we've had, but it's clear he's seeing pressure when it's not there with 3-guys coming in, too.

Now, he did a much better job of checking down to short area guys instead of taking negative plays - but that's where we need more YAC ability.  It's why I want Perine as a RB receiver instead of 12 formation pass plays with Dulcich & Manhertz out there (I get sometimes you need to pass out of 12 to keep the D honest, but it's painful watching those 2 guys lumber out there to run routes).

Either way, having Jeudy back would be a godsend.   Just PLEASE don't re-injure the hammy.
