Dead cap is money that has already been paid to the players but hasn’t hit the salary cap yet. This manifests itself either with guaranteed money that hasn’t been paid out and is still due or a signing bonus having been pushed out into future or void years. Night and day from last season where as of July 2023 the Vikings were 8th in the league in dead cap ($35.54M). KAM and co. have done a solid job, thus far, navigating the cap and giving themselves flexibility. https://www.profootballrumors.com/2023/07/2023-nfl-dead-money-by-team
vikesfan89
Won't that change quite a bit once the void years hit?

Dallas really can't do much, especially with Dak's stance on his extension, to get that significantly lower unless they plan on making it significantly worse for themselves. And Watson's contract is guaranteed...they could restructure it to free up space, but there's still 3 yrs left on that deal...they'll both be able to lower it a little this year, but they've hamstrung themselves. At least they both currently have good defenses, but we'll see how long that lasts. We shall see. I think Watson's contract will be restructured to prorate this year's salary into future years and Dak will either be extended or they will push cap dollars into the future by adding void years. Exactly...we'll have to see. But, I do thank the bejeezus to not be a fan of one of those 2 teams.

If the Vikings let Kirk, Hunter, and Davenport leave, that’s going to be nearly $50M in dead cap.

I never considered throwing anything at the screen because of Mattison. It's not his fault that he doesn't have any burst. He is what he is and always has been. It's the organization's fault for putting him in position to be a primary option in the first place. He will always be remembered for this....

vike daddy
The Bills had to engage in major cap surgery this week, trimming $37 million of 2024 dollars in one day and there are plenty of reasons for it. Here’s a big one. The cap bill for quarterback Josh Allen’s contract is starting to come due. His six-year, $258 million extension was structured to keep the cap charges low in 2021 through 2023: $10.2 million, $16.3 million, $18.6 million. This year, it skyrockets to $47 million. Next year, the cap number moves to $56.5 million. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/josh-allens-cap-number-skyrockets-in-2024

As long as Allen is playing QB, their window will always be open. Buffalo is just going to have to retool and hit in the draft.
